Varieties Question: Trade Dollars

I am just asking for an opinion here. I, and a few of the other Trade Dollar people, have been closely following the varieties discussion. Here's the question and please answer if you have an opinion. I submitted a proposal to PCGS regarding the extended varieties set of Trade Dollars. Basically the set would include Type I and II obverse and reverse combinations as well as a few of the most notable DDR's and DDO's. I view this as similar to (and in most cases) much for obvious than the some of the varieties contained in a series such as the early dollars.

I was recently informed that PCGS might not do the varieties set for the Trade Dollar series. Anyone out there have an opinion on whether Trade Dollars should have a extended varieties set included in the series?

I asked PCGS about recognizing varieties before the Set Registry program was even announced and got the answer that there wasn't any plan to. Trade dollars don't generate the same kind of interest Washington quarters do. image

I am a serious collector of both Early Dollars and Trade Dollars. Aside from the fact that many of the Early Dollars are also Red Book varieties, there should no good reason not to include some of the more prominent and/or popular Trade Dollar varieties.

Really now, can anyone honestly tell me that it is easy for most Early Dollar collectors to pick out the following: 1796 SmDt (vs LgDt) SmLtr, 1797 9x7 SmLtr (vs LgLtr), 1798 10 Arrs (vs 13 Arrs -- this isn't *that* easy!), 1799 IrrDt (I still do not know why it is Irregular!), 1800 Lo8-WideDt (vs Normal Date)?!?

When I see a T1 or T2 obv or rev on a Trade Dollar, there is no mistake. When I see the '76-CC DDR, it is obvious as heck. (This is currently optional, but should be required.) There is more. How many more? That can be debated/negotiated.

My opinion: let's have varieties!!! It'll give TradeDollarNut a few more things to work on!

  • As with my sets inother series, I prefer the basic set. But after seeing the rankings in the Washington series, it seems to me that PCGS should include a variety series as well. It would seem that there reluctance to reflects the fact that there are few Trade Dollar collectors and that they have not given recognized varietal attribution in the past. To begin provide varietal attribution at this time would certainly cause some confusion in the marketplace. By that I mean, if you now own a coin that has no attribution on its label but would clearly qualify AND you don't resubmit, it makes for more confusion for subsequent purchasers. PCGS would cause some people to resubmit ( paying fees ) and only some would recive the attribution. Those that didn't would probably lambast PCGS (right here on the boards). Given so few coins, why would PCGS invite the inevitable hassle. However, it wouldn't surprise me to see VAMs added to Morgan dollars...there would probably be hundreds/thousands of resubmissions in that case.

I'm in for Trade Dollar varieties as well as Seated Liberty dime varieties. Shouldn't we also think about which varieties?

  • Not knowing much about trade $ varities, the T I & II and the DDR are the only ones off the top of my head. What are the most popular ones?

PCGS slabs ONE dime variety, the 73 DDO. It isnt even all that popular... go figure

The varieties that I proposed for the set were the following:

    Extended Set - Circulation (Varieties)
    1873
    1873-CC
    1873-S
    1874
    1874-CC
    1874-S
    1875 Type I/I
    1875-CC Type I/I
    1875-S Type I/I
1875-S/CC (I would leave this one in the basic set as well)
    1875 Type I/II
    1875-CC Type I/II
    1875-S Type I/II
    1876 Type I/I
    1876-CC Type I/I
    1876-S Type I/I
    1876 Type I/II
    1876-CC Type I/II
    1876-S Type I/II
    1876 Type II/II
    1876-S Type II/II
    1877
    1877-CC
    1877-S
    1878-CC
    1878-S
Double Dies (These all have F&S numbers against them)
    1876-CC DDR
    1876- S DDO
    1878-S DDR
    1877-S DDR

BTW.....good luck to those looking for some of these.....they are very, very tough. I also was thinking about some of the more subtle DD's but I decided that F&S do a good job of limiting the which ones are most prominent.
