Group rip has been discussed through PM's but no one seems to want to do the same old thing again. I keep checking BBCE for new ideas but there never seems to be any new inventory. I even checked BBCKid and Dacardworld but they have basically the same inventory but the prices are higher.
I'm still out of this due to lack of a job, but one of these days I'd love to do a set building rip where we all can build nice NM-MT-Mint sets of 79, 80 and 81 Topps or something like that. If think if we settled on a year and everyone bought 2 boxes, we could do this very well.
<< <i>So have the group rips become a private matter now? >>
Yes Trent. I heard from a guy who knows a guy whose cousin's brother's aunt's nephew said that they're doing it through PM to try to exclude you. Could be just hearsay though.
<< <i>Steve is just trying to protect you from yourself and your buying more of that useless 80's Baseball Junk, Bill !!! >>
But that's all he seems to have right now. Steve, if you read this, please don't force me to buy some more 86 Topps and 88 Donruss baseball cases. Anyone interested in purchasing some 88 Donruss wax boxes, I will sell them for $14 delivered.

I'd try another of the 89 Upper Deck boxes... would prefer low#s. Also missed out on the 77 or 78 opc... I always forget which ones they are. Anyhow, gonna have to get one goining soon as I'm going to schedule a Vegas trip for March and then the wife will tighten the noose!
Looking to trade for, or purchase, raw or graded vintage for my baseball sets: 1927 York Caramel, 1951 Bowman, 1957 Topps, 1967-1979. http://richsbaseball.webs.com
I have an idea... but it's just a joke... I think... kind of. There is NO WAY I would be willing to set this thing up.
Here's my idea... this isn't so much as a group rip, but more like an investment idea (a bad one, I know). We should pool our money together and buy the 1952 Topps Pack he has. We would have it opened (with witnesses, and on video, probably have Steve do it) have all five cards graded, no matter what (stains, corners, whatever), then sold in an auction (ebay or otherwise). If Steve sold the pack to us for $5500 (even though he may offer 10% off, we'll leave it at $5500 just for math purposes), it would cost us $175 to submit the cards (Express Option), plus $53.50 for shipping ($26.75 to and from approx.). That would give us a total of $5728.50. Round it up to $5800 to cover any auction or paypal fees. Divide $5800.00 cost by (29) people, and that's exactly $200.00 per person.
Before you start pounding me, these are approximate numbers. If we were crazy enough to do this, someone smarter and more reliable than me would have to run it. (obviously)
AGAIN, this is more like a "wouldn't this be cool if we were crazy enough to do it" thing. Here's the way I look at it, I've spent $200 on group rips in the past, and had worse results than I would ever get with ripping a pack like this. Even if we ripped this pack and pulled (5) PSA 5 commons that sold for $20 each, that would still beat some of the profits I've had in the past with dropping $200 on packs (see 2008 Allen & Ginter, lol). Regardless, I would be more than willing to throw in $200 just to be able to say I was a part of ripping a 1952 Topps pack. This is totally up to you guys, I just think it would be COOL. Anyway, don't beat me up too much for bringing it up.
I think the '52 Topps rip would be interesting to try, but it seems like a definite financial loss. That doesn't mean I wouldn't do it though. It just might be better financially to buy the pack for $5500 and then sell it on eBay for $4000.
Yeah, I would look at it more like a lottery ticket. With lottery tickets, you don't look for the sure thing, you look for the possible jackpot! Darn this article for planting this into my skull...
I emailed Steve back in December 2007 on the 52 Topps pack that was listed on the website as I had crazy thoughts myself of taking a chance and he indicated that it was a series 1 pack. That would do away with the chance of pulling Mantle and the other key high numbers.
I'm assuming that the pack on his website is still the same one from 12/07, but that might be a bad assumption.
I think the only pack POSSIBLY worth the rip, if it were not a Mantle Series (but DAMN ... a high series pack would cost a LOT!) would be series 1 and pray like hell for a real clean PAFKO!
STAY HEALTHY!

Great point! There are still many great cards in the Series 1 packs (Pafko, Berra, Mays), but that dramatically decreases the chances to hitting anything to call home about. I'd STILL plop down $200 for 1/29th though! lol
I guess he either saw what we were contemplating, or someone decided to get it before we did cause the 52 Topps pack is no longer showing on his site. What gives????
I had assumed that because we are in a recession Steve Hart would be flooded with people wanting to unload their vintage unopened material and that "new arrivals" on his website would be a regular occurance. But as mentioned in this thread this hasn't been the case. Back in 1991, during the last big recession here in southern California, I vividly recall visiting one of the largest national mail order companies at that time and they told me they had eight sellers for every one buyer coming into their store!! The owner showed me a sample of some of the beautiful high-grade '50's cards that he was picking up for only 20% of book value-in particular a near flawless '57 Mantle he bought for only $150 and a similarly conditioned '53 Mantle for $300. The owner told me even though the hobby was currently in the dumps he would buy each and every quality vintage card offered to him at 20% book value knowing the hobby would rebound in the coming years. At that time I thought he was really taking a chance but of course it turned out he was right and the hobby did turn around a few years later and I'm sure he made a killing when PSA started grading around '96 (I think). The owner is still around today and is a nationally known name--Dave Kohler--owner of Sportscardsplus in Laguna Niguel, California.

<< <i>Great point! There are still many great cards in the Series 1 packs (Pafko, Berra, Mays)............. >>
Berra (#191) and Mays (#261) are not in series 1.
In series 1 you would have a shot at hall of famers like: Rizzuto, Irvin, Spahn, Snider, Roberts, and Slaughter. You'd also have a shot at stars like Hodges and Kluszewski (among others).
I assumed Series 1 was 1-310... I must be wrong. You'll have to forgive my ignorance, I'm a modern card collector with just an interest in the vintage.

You could probably get back $150-200 auctioning the wrapper, too.
We post a list of cards from one year and usually one set from various sports (except hockey) based on the inventory at BBCE. Everyone commits to and purchases a specific number of packs from each box. BBCE ships them directly to the person that purchases the packs and we bust 'em and post scans on the thread.
If we did some good O-pee-chee Hockey sets from the 80's I for one would be in.
Maybe Yzerman's RC year as it also has LaFontaine, Gilmour, Chelios, Verbeek, Neely and a handful of other key rookies. Or Hull and Shanahan's RC year. Or Roy or Lemeuix...lots of great years in the 80's for o-pee-chee hockey
