I'm tired of terrible scans!

I have had the same scanner for almost 6 years now (Cannon CanoScan Lide 60) and I feel like my scanner is on the fritz. I am not sure if my problems are with my scanner or with my settings. Can you please check out my scans and let me know if my problems are with my scanner or with my settings. Can someone please help?

I played with it a while but couldn't get it to look much better. It could use a bit of contrast and sharpening.
It would help if you scanned the cards with the lid open, in a darkened room.
I've got a Canon 4400f scanner, for under $90 it does excellent work.

  • My previous scanner was also a Canon CanoScan. While I liked how fast the scanner could process 150 dpi images, I was frustrated by the lack of clear, crisp scans -- like the ones you posted below. That scanner finally died a few weeks ago (after 1000 or scans) and I posted the same question to this board. The responses were overwhelmingly consistent (thanks again) and I bought an Epson scanner, which does great work. I still haven't figured out how to auto-crop the images, so that does take an extra step, but here are the results!

The biggest improvement is the clarity of text on the back of the cards!

I've used 7 or 8 different scanners. I found that the 4400 not only gives the best scan of the bunch I've used, but it really gets into the slabs of graded cards.

Just buy an Epson Perfection 4490 Photo and you won't have to worry about that anymore. It will cost you appr. $150.00 but it's well worth it.

If you would like to see a few scan examples, let me know.

I have an Epson Perfection V500 and I love it.
  • The difference is your scanner is scanning the thing closest to the glass... the outer rim of the holder.

The 4400 has a different scanning process and automatically detects an image. If you notice in your scans, the scanned outer rim of the holder is well in focus where as the card is not. That's because really the actual card on the flatbed is a few mms away from the glass because of the holder.

So you need a scanner that will scan the card, not the holder. If that makes sense.

Last month I purchased an EPSON PERFECTION V300 PHOTO SCANNER. The scans are extremely clear and I am very happy with it. Believe it or not the best price, including shipping, that I found was directly from Epson's website. I was able to find a coupon for free 2 day shipping (a $25.00 savings) so the total cost, delivered, was $99.00.

Here is an example of what my scanner can do. Like I said, it's the best ever!
