Is Andruw Jones A Hall Of Famer?

JackWESQJackWESQ Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭
ESPN's Buster Olney wonders here whether Andruw Jones' career is in jeopardy (I think it is) and, if so, whether he is a Hall of Famer? Uh, how about a H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks heck no! I don't think anyone has fallen faster and harder than Jones in the history of MLB, to wit:

2006 - 41 HRs and 129 RBIs and 126 OPS+
2007 - 26 HRs and 94 RBIs and 88 OPS+
2008 - 3 HRs and 14 RBIs and 34 OPS+

Wow.

Caveat: Jones' career is not in jeopardy if he is willing to accept a non-roster invite to spring training image

Good career, but definitely NOT a HOFer, IMO.

If you have to ask, he isn't
  • It's really a shame the way his career has ended up. If he had even maintained the dismal numbers he put up in '07, he would have been well on his way to 500+ HRs.

While I agree that he is not a HOFer, I think he deserves more respect and consideration than h-e-double hockey sticks, no.

His hitting wasn't HOF caliber except for a couple of years, but it wasn't that far off, either. But his fielding was as good as it gets - possibly the best ever - and that should at least make people stop and appreciate what he brought to the game. There are dozens of people in the HOF and doubtless many more on the way who will all be quietly forgotten over time because nothing about them was really all that special; Andruw Jones in CF was special. If he'd managed five more seasons at even his pre-2005 level I think he would have been a bona fide HOFer.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

He's no Jim Rice, Dave kingman or Gene Tenace!

It's been stated by some top respected baseball guys that Jones is the best ever in Centerfield. That's a lofty statement. He needs to get his offense back. I'm wondering if there are any locker room rumors as to his decline being so dramatic. Home runs were down by the league leaders last year. How many led the A.L.

And not even remotely close to Ron Santo either.

If his career trajectory had a more gentle downward slope, I'd probably say yes. But given his total collapse in production, I'm with the "no way" crowd.

Based on his career right now, I would say a Big NO. If he could have had ok year during 2007 and 2008 and then had another 5 to 6 great years at the plate and a few more golden gloves, that could be another story. The latest I read on Jones is that he is stinking it up in winter league ball right now and that the Dodgers want to give him away with his new restructured contract.
