E-BAY

How is the E-BAY experience lately for buying and selling? It's been a few years since I've had an e-bay account because it just seemed like it was getting so expensive. I also was a little concerned about security. I was recieving a lot of phishing activity in my e-mail account etc. Is it worth selling some of my common date stuff on e-bay anymore? I'm just starting to run out of room,so it was either e-bay or the local dealers. Any thoughts on where I would get the best return? Thanks

  • Selling has not been so great as of late. My common date date stuff has suffered, but I'm like you running out of room. I prefer to sell it on ebay, than sell directly to a dealer, at least in my area.

Common and/or average material is soft. But then it's been soft for quite some time, and is going to stay soft. If you have a local dealer who's honest AND is moving enough volume to afford to pay reasonable money, you may do better selling that way. If not, eBay would be the choice.

Also, eBay is a bit tougher selling environment these days. You need to bone up on a whole bunch of policy changes that happened last year. Spend some time reading through the announcements section.

Heck yeah, try ebay for a few coins and see how it goes. It's not soft for me, prices
are just fine and I don't have to deal with dealers trying to cut my throat. Hmmmmmmmmm,
not all dealers are that way, maybe. What the heck, give it a shot. No more phishing, spam
or other problems today on the bay.

  • If you have not sold or bought there in a while, then I would definately take Russ's advice on getting caught up on the policy changes. Here are a few things that have happenned in the last year that are important:

    1. It is not any cheaper

    2. Buyer's have leverage. Only they can leave negative feedback, and a few negs on your star feedback in a month, could cause you to lose selling privilages. You must keep the buyer's happy. Shipping charges are ussually the feedback area that gets hit the most.

    3. There has been a trend of fewer buyers competing on items. This has left many sellers losing money on auctions. As a result, there are far more "buy it now" listings showing up. The auction style listings are not as popular as they used to be for sellers.

    4. You should get a PayPal account. You are not allowed to say you accept mail payments anymore.

    5. Many rules about coin listings concerning titles, discriptions, and photos. Many of these involve certified vs raw, picturs of slabs, stating grades, etc.
