Are there any tricks to measuring the centering of a card?

I was wondering if someone could give me a template or some type of guidelines on how to measure the centering of a card. I seem to be off a little when I try to figure if something is 60-40 or 70 30. I am not the best at math and I wonder if there is some trick to it that makes it easy and quick. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Download this. Scan your cards and use it to measure -

    jruler

Of course the formula to measure centering is, and I'm no mathematician -

One border / total border width = % centering for that side

    Example -

    27 pixels / 50 pixels = 54%

If I'm wrong then it's no wonder I can't grade my own cards. image

Here's how I (and most people) figure out centering by pixel count, and I made this diagram to illustrate.

I had college professors who couldn't illustrate things that well.
    Nick,
    do you use JRuler?

Nick, when I hold my cards up to the monitor, they fit right inside the middle, rectangular window. Does that mean all my cards are trimmed?

More great information guys, Thanks Alot for sharing this, I have never measured my centering on anything I have purchased, always used the eyeball approach.

    Where's the dasm Etch-a-Sketch?!?!?!!?

Just a thought, regardless of the technical measurement of a card's centering, keep in mind that the visual appeal of the card will carry more weight than if the card is bordering the centering threshold. A card that "looks" more OC than it is will usually be graded more harshly than a card that is more OC but looks better centered.

Also, keep in mind that tilt and diamond cuts come in to play and may change the centering of the card at differing points along the borders.
