So.... are either/both of you going to order them? If so, what will you do with them? Search for ones to submit for slabbing, fill folders/albums, & circulate or turn back in the rest? Other?

I wish they made these available in smaller quantities............ Seems like a shame to put out $250 just to get 5 coins for my & my kids' Whitman folder collections & then turn back in most of the rest (it would take me forever & a lot of frowning cashier faces to "spend down" the remaining $245.....). But at least the good news is that they plan on circulating the Sac's again, rather than just sell in Mint/Proof sets and expensive bags/rolls like recently...... They should do that with ALL coins, like the JFK halves as well!

Do you really have trouble spending dollar coins where you live? Here in Seattle no one looks twice when I spend them. I am thinking of getting 250 of the new "sacs" and saving one or two and then spending the rest.

Plunk down more than just 1 or 2 of them (Sac's or Presidents) at a time for anything, and most clerks either don't know what to do with them & hold up the line asking for help (at which time other customers in line get antsy), or have an exasperated look due to no extra space in their drawer in which to put them........... Very few folks are eager to see them.

And I'm so used to using Discover for Cash-back and maintaining spending records that I'm not used to carrying around all those coins to get rid of them..........

If the government REALLY wanted to circulate the coins, they'd simply make every bank in the entire country take at least 1 box of every new Mint product every year as part of its continued participation in the FDIC program. That way, collectors could get all they needed from any bank without having to run from one bank to another to see if they had any in stock or could order them. Plus, they wouldn't have to pay such premiums to the Mint. The banks would be happy because they could easily get rid of them to collectors & maybe develop a few new customers. And the average Joe might just pick up a few & circulate if tellers asked if they wanted any back in change........

    Just a thought.

It's been said a zillion times before but they need to get rid of the dollar bill if they want the dollar coins to circulate widely. I don't see it happening otherwise.

I usually don't get much notice but I had a cashier at the gym today look twice. She was young (and blond and cute image ) and probably isn't used to much more than credit cards image

I put in for 2 boxes of these new ones today. Will take out a roll or two and then spend the rest...though, I still have about $500+ of the previous dollar coins to spend too image

    Dave,

I've probably spent over $3000+ of these in the last year. I don't like using them where I would normally use a credit card (I like getting my mileage image ), but I do use them for lunch and such. The small $1-$15 purchases. I use them for tolls through the local park cut through, for lunches, for tips, etc. $245 probably lasts me 3 weeks, or less, if I keep a roll with me.

I guess another factor in my inability to "spend-down" the Sacs, etc is that I telecommute. So I no longer have the daily opportunities to spend them at the lunchcart, for parking, tolls, etc. Seems that when I go out, it's for larger, credit-card-type purchases like groceries, gas, etc. That's probably the same reason why it's taken me into 2009 to find examples in change of 2008 circulating coins for our folders - - I simply don't use cash all that much on a daily basis.

If I were to get a box, I'd likely keep the 5 we need, maybe a few more for fellow-collectors trades, a few to spend, and the rest would go right into the free change counter machine at the local bank. Seems a shame. And, as I would likely get either just P or D rolls by ordering from the Mint, I'd still not have filled our folders for the year........

Is anyone who's getting rolls interested in passing along a few 2009 Sacs that they'd otherwise spend/return to a fellow collector at cost plus postage? I'd need 5 each P & D.

On the other hand, if I got a box, would there be enough fellow Forum members interested in my shipping out small quantities to them similarly to make it worthwhile?

Thanks for the link. I just ordered a set. My $1,000 box of GW is down to the last 10 rolls! And I get my 1% cash back--for buying cash.

    DBST,
I would be happy to send you some coins at face plus shipping. When my coins arrive I will tell you if I have P, D, or both. Do you need any P mint GWs? Please answer via PM.

Most of the time when I spend them the clerk will ask "are your sure you want to spend these they must be worth more than a dollar"
  • tahoe98tahoe98 Posts: 11,388 ✭✭✭

...............i spend them every chance i get. i enjoy the befuddled look by some of the clerks when i hand them to them. often they'll say, soooooooo, these are them new dollar coins i heard about! image

Spending these is just plain geeky.
This is probably why I enjoy it.

$250.00 and got free shipping. Such a deal.

I don't know if you can use Discover to pay, but if they don't charge any premium for a credit card, there's actually a $5 PROFIT you'd make on each $250 box!!image

OT: How does one go about finding a credit card that gives you that much (2%) cash back? The best I could find was "Blue Cash" from Amex (1.5%) but I think you need an excellent credit score to be eligible for that one.

Ordered some native american direct ship last week.

    Still waiting.

At mint now says "no longer available".

Any reason to not open these if they get here?

It would be silly if you didn;t.

I think you'll find the overall quality to be less than desireable but then you could come across some error's.

BTW, the mint upped the maximum order from $500 to 20 boxes of $250 each ($5,000).
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I'm presuming that's why they're temporarily out of stock -- now that they allow larger quantity orders, it will inevitably deplete the available supply faster.

I'm tempted to order some of these myself, if for nothing else, then at least I can take advantage of that 'cash back' idea which others have discussed, but have yet to find a CC that rewards enough % to make it worth my while.image

    Wow, 5000 at a time.

And they recently told me at my bank that I no longer have to roll coins before I turn them in.
    Actually they prefer them unrolled.

Might just try a larger quantity next time, and earn a bit more on the old Discovercard!

Lee, Where is the 5,000 limit from? The mint web site still states in more than one place $500 limit.

I have ordered all I am eligible to.... after all, I was nearing the end of the $1,000 Box of GW P Mints.

I spend them for lunch (five dollars and a Kennedy half for the subway $5 plus tax footlong), hair cuts ($7 at the Pentagon or $10 plus tip in my building), minor grocery purchases, tips, etc. I used 24 at a work luncheon the other day. By the end of lunch, I sold two more to people who heard they came from me, and I saw the 24 get spread quickly as others arrived to pay. DUring lunch I saw them being passed between people who were looking at them. The phrase Chuck-E-CHeese did come up....

has anyone received any "P" from the Direct ship program

i see they are unavailable now but the last 2 boxes i received were "D"s

maybe the mint will get more in because they rasied the limit to 20 boxes that you can order
