Help: Magna Carta Coins

Ok guys, this post is TWO fold.... one, does anyone know of a coin that commemorates the Magna Carta...... two, post some coins from the 1215 to 1297 era. The Magna Carta was written in 1215 but the final version, which is the one that is in the statute books of England and Wales, wasn't until 1297..... I'm doing this for a guy at work who likes to have historical debates!

  • Well don't have any pics to post at the moment, but English coins of 1215 and 1297 are very obtainable, especially the 1297 era. In both
cases the English silver penny was the standard coin of the day. Silver pennies of Edward I are easy to track down (he ruled 1272-1307).
Silver pennies of 1215 are trickier, because that was at the very end of King John's rule-- and his coins aren't easy to identify. The silver
pennies of King Richard, King John and King Henry III (who ruled right after John) are virtually indistinguishable from each other visualwise.
I think only minor variations in the legend (which are usually very hard to read) enable experts to distinguish which King that coin was
issued under. But at least we know with these c. 1215 pennies, any penny with a short cross -- as opposed to a long cross-- was struck
    1189-1248.

Come to think of it, the silver pennies of Edward I look awful similar to the silver pennies of Edward II and Edward III as well

A CoinArchives search for the phrase "Magna Carta" only comes up with two hits, both medals commemorating William III - one Scottish, one Dutch.
Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.
    Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, "Meditations"

Apparently I have been awarded the DPOTD twice. B)
  • Todd,
There has never been a coin that commemorates the Magna Carta, but there are coins that commemorate the 1689 Bill of Rights/Claim of Right (British 1989 2 Pounds coins).

    Aidan.
  • The Magna Carta has an interesting section on reforming the abuses of widows. It states that a widow is the absolute master of her husband's house for 40 days after his death. During this period, the heir must assign the metes and bounds of her dower without charge.
Dower was typically 1/3 of any real estate the husband had owned during the course of the marriage.
