RAREST DESIGN & DENOMINATION BASED MINT STATE TYPE COIN LISTINGS 1809-2009. CLASSIC, MODERN, SIL

This is a rough draft of a table that is going in our new moderns document that we hope to have out this coming year. This table is a ranking of design based rarity in the last two hundred years for all mint state coins. All the older classics listed are only for surviving populations of coins still in ms-60 or higher. All classics grading AU-58 and lower could be added to the shown pops but I wanted to show the classics in the best light possible. A few revisions will need to be made because some moderns for this year have mintages so small that they likely will be included soon. This is a design rarity listing for mint state coins and the listing for all proof type coins since the 1850s will be issued at some point. TYPE COLLECTING AS DEFINED BY THE RED BOOK: COLLECTING BY DESIGN, DENOMINATION AND COMPOSITION.

In terms of design rarity moderns are strong all the way back to the early 1800s and we can still afford them....for now.

Why did you stop at 200 years and not go back to 1793 to make it complete for all u.s. coins?
  • Options
I just went back 200 years because it was a nice round number. Its a rough draft and I am still working on adding some other issues that should be there but I don't have solid data no them yet. I may go back to 1792 when I make the next draft.

    Thanks

This is a really nice list for type collectors.

If date and mint mark collecting ever go out of style, some of these series are in trouble.

Considering they were minted in the millions, 150,000 for mint state Indian cents seems pretty low.

4500 mint state survivors seems like a fairly big # for HR Saints considering what they sell for.

Great list, Eric--worth hours of perusal.

Did I miss the Old San Francisco Mint $5 gold? I believe it came in right around 16,000. Jamestown will of course certainly be on there--if I'm understanding the concept alright. And the First Spouses, too, eh?

Thank you and Happy New Year!

It would be great if you would specify Unc or Proof, assuming you are not counting both as one.

edited - I guess you are only reporting Mint State (uncirculated) here. My bad.

This is an older rough draft and I have added more coins that I did not have good data on yet as of the time of previous post. You guys will all see the final listings when they come out.

    >>If date and mint mark collecting ever go out of style, some of these series are in trouble.<<

If that happens, I will be happy to trade 2 BU 1945-P dimes for a 1916-D, any condition! image

What a great list and I can't imagine the number of hours involved in the compilation. A couple of questions: 1. Does this list count only PCGS coins or does it also include NGC? 2. What percentage of these coins would you estimate as still being raw but in mint state? 3. How badly would this skew the numbers , if at all?
I have already printed this list as I consider it an outstanding resource for developing my own collection and future invstment guide. Thank you for sharing your findings.image

    Ron,

These numbers come from a blend of NGC, PCGS, ANAC and the Red Book Sibling "A guide to US Type Coins".

The list is being improved constantly and will be updated further soon.

Do 241 and 242 have exactly the same mintage?

It looks like you've assumed that all of the classic commems have survived more or less completely in mint state. I think that most every class commem type is know in circulated condititon, and some are VERY commonly found that way. First pass: Isabella, Lafayette, Lexington, Pilgrim. Also, all of the c1904 gold $1 commems were heavily used in jewelry... you should get feedback from someone who pays more attention than I do, but I think a lot of the numbers need to be pushed way downwards...

Typo...I will correct on my master listing

    Thanks

Also, all of the c1904 gold $1 commems were heavily used in jewelry... you should get feedback from someone who pays more attention than I do, but I think a lot of the numbers need to be pushed way downwards... >>

I have had a hard time finding text for surviving pops for the Older Commems. As a group they have see very little circulation for the coins that sold at a premium over face.....not to say that a few have not seen hardship. It makes sense that the $1 gold could be used to make jewelry but I don't know how it estimate this. Can you suggest some good text on this?

I do know that the pops of AU and lower commems are VERY low and the center of better date commems grading bell line curve is very high indicating that circulation was not the lot of many.

Terrific first draft. Will you supplement with CIRC / AU / MS populations based on TPG population reports?

Several of the commoner early commems are or used to be readily available in circulated condition, such as Columbian, Stone Mountain, Monroe, Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver. I think some of these were released to circulation to liquidate the unsold inventory.

This is a very interesting list. But I couldn't help but doubt the 1883-1913 V Nickels. No way that many have survived in Mint State. Unless there's an uncertified hoard of original rolls of these I don't know about.

The V nickel listing point came after looking at pop reports and the range of total mint state pops for V nickels given by Bowers and the same guys that write the Red Book. Those text give ranges for these issues surviving in MS form and circulated form and I used numbers close to the center.

I have corrected the errors you guys have found on the master list please tell me if you see anything else are have better references I will gladly change the numbers. I want the listing to be correct.
