Bill Cowher has rejected a second chance to return to coaching, declining the opportunity to interview with the New York Jets, according to ESPN.
ESPN's John Clayton is reporting the major obstacle was Cowher's desire to bring in his own personnel director. After firing Eric Mangini as coach on Monday, Jets owner Woody Johnson said he wants Mike Tannenbaum to remain the team's general manager.
UPDATE: ESPN also is reporting that the Jets still hope to interview Cowher, and that they are willing to restructure the organization. According to 1050 ESPN Radio in New York, Cowher plans to talk publicly about his coaching plans for the first time on CBS' pregame show Sunday.
Clayton says the Jets job interests Cowher because he's intrigued by coaching in the New York market, and also because his two daughters are either attending school or are working in the NY-New Jersey area.
Over the weekend, Cowher told the Browns he wasn't interested in replacing Romeo Crennel. Cowher has indicated he'll return to coaching in 2010, but Clayton says he will be back in 2009 only if all conditions are ideal.
