I may have hit the motherload with this Nolan Ryan

I picked up a box of 86 Topps baseball from BBCE about 3 weeks ago. It has been sitting in my closet since I purchased it. I was even considering not opening the box and putting it with my unopened material. Well I was about 6 packs in when I almost pooped in my pants. I pulled this Nolan Ryan and looked over it 4 or 5 times and noticed that it was mint. I know that even though it may be mint the odds of psa giving a 10 on the card is very difficult.

I am going to submit it either way. I just wanted to get some feedback from some members here on what they think. Well, here is the card please let me know what you guys think of it. Any white dots or specs you see on the card are actually dust particles that are showing up in the scan. There is also no chipping or white exposed anywhere around the edges of the card. I can give you 100% certainty that those white marks are not on the card. It looks like a beauty to me. Out of the 8 packs I have opened so far this was the best looking card out of all of the packs.

Depending on what grader you get, and their respective take on T/B centering, looks like it could happen. It's a strong example for the set. Not probable, but not completely out of question. Good luck!

Top right hand corner has dust type spots, is that on the card?

    Good for you.

Great card. Some graders might mistake Nolan's chin mole for an imperfection.

    How does the back look?

Nice card then, I think it will 9.

On the left side where the black meets the white are 2 spots where I think the ink was disturbed.

Back in 1986 I opened too much of this product. How about the reverse is the red ink really rich?

    Good luck with the grades!

    Good for you.
  • That bottom left corner is going to be the thing that screws you.

The bottom left corner is crisp. So you don't think I have a shot at the 10

The printing on the back looks fine. and the centering is good enough to fall within the limits of a 10 and the bottom left corver is not soft at all.

Can we get a scan of the back?

    You should submit it...just know you've got about a 10% chance at a 10.

  • I will just say that out of about 15 pack fresh 86 Ryan's, I subbed the best one I had in June or July and it looked flawless with 50/50 centering front and back. It came back a 9. However, a surefire 9 is still worth subbing. With shipping, I got about $29 for mine.

The left edge has what appears to be two chips in the black and the bottom left corner when compared to the bottom right corner does not look as good.

Personally, I would not 10 that card. That said, I am tough on my cards and have had many that I tought would be 9's come back 10's

Good luck if you decide to sub it.
  • Great Ryan card, I wish you luck!

Nice card! Does not look like a 10 though
  • good luck subbing... I have one going in on my $5 jan special, hoping for the best and at $5 I think it's worth the gamble.

  • I think you have a solid 9. The rough nick on the black on the left and that bottom left corner could keep it out of a 10.

You are the only one who thinks so but good luck if you do sub it.There is a reason there are very 1986 10's.
