new guy with silver eagle proof questions

I've spent all my time on the currency part of these boards so I don't know much about coins. I think I have decided to start up a collection of american eagle proof coins as a place to sink some money. Is now a good time to do this? Is there anything particular that I should be aware of when buying these coins. Probably just coins in the original mint boxes that haven't been graded. Probably all off ebay.

Also I was just going through some stuff on the Mint website and notice that almost everything is unavailable at this time, such as the gold buffalo proofs, platinum proofs, ect.... Is this because they have sold out of almost everything or because at this time they won't make a big enough profit if they sell at their stated prices?

Looking forward to learning a bit more about the coin side. image

The very first thing you should do is to purchase a Redbook for coin information.

I doubt purchasing proof silver eagles is going to teach you much of anything about coins. Consider picking a series or a denomination to collect a set or subset of.

  • Be selective on which eagles you choose. The series is notorious for spotting. Otherwise, have fun and welcome.image

With all due respect, the ASE's are today's Morgan Dollars. As posted above, if this is the series you would like to collect, go for it! There is an issue with spotting, I would recommend doing some research on that on this forum, as there is a lot of info that can be had using the search function.

The sell outs are also well documented on here and a google search will teach you a lot of what's going on with that too. You may even learn some interesting info if you check into the Precious Metals forum here.

    Good luck, and enjoy!

  • You folks just reminded me to check my 2006 20th anniversary set. Looks like I made the right decision by leaving them in the original packaging. All is well, no spotting.image

    welcome!
I like to recommend the $5 american gold eagles to new collectors. About $100 each and will always keep value (provided gold does not tank) and are a good candidate to increase in value in today's economic enviornment.

Oh, yea, PCGS grading time on coins is much quicker than their currency dept.!

  • I was actually looking at the 1oz gold buffalo at first, unfortunatly I don't have the cash flow to make much of a collection out of those, 2-3 would probably be it. The silver eagle was the next best thing I thought. And I could make a pretty descent collection out of them at the same price for a couple gold buffalo's or a couple of gold eagles. I'll have to do some research into the "spotting issue" it looks like. I like pretty much all of the 1oz coins I saw on the mint website. This forum is quite a bit busier than the currency forum. I had to go to the 3rd page just to find my post here from earlier today. Looks like it may be quite a bit harder to keep up on this one. The search function may become my new best friend here.

  • Welcome, and by the way, the Buffs and Plats are sold out and not to return, last year for most of them. If you really like them go to Ebay. Check some of the other threads and you can read all about them .
  • PCGS has offered $50,000 to any one who has the solution in removing white spots from silver eagles without screwing up the coin. INTERESTED?
  • The US Mint realized they were offering too many products. They recently sharply reduced their number of offerings.

If you love the look of the proof silver eagles then go for it! The eagles are America's bullion coins. I think they look great but won't pay much over the melt value, that is the value of the silver they contain. If you love the gold buffalo you might consider that. It might be more satisfying to own one of something you love rather than dozens of something you like.

I always suggest starting a type set. That is collecting one of each type of coin. You may find you love a particular series and want to collect a complete set of those. Maybe you can start with one gold buffalo and one silver eagle. image
