Wow is that a bad pic to see. I've been a road cyclist for many years and that is certainly something I'm glad I've never seen in person.

I remember reading about that when it happened earlier this year in a road race in Mexico (If I remember correctly.) Unfortunately one of the guys in the air above the car died.

The jerk driving the car decided to drive down a road that was CLOSED for the race. I'm guessing the Mexican Police got a DWI outta that one!

  • bicycling is a sport.

    a lame one.
    but still a sport.

and the photo captures a moment in time....that inspires awe.
  • I remember many years ago I did 2 bikes trips in Mexico, the Rosarito Beach to Ensenada and Tecate to Ensenada. There were no cars allowed on the road except for emergency cars. Even at that there were accidents between cyclists. There was like 5,000 riders on the road, pretty crazy.

Why would anybody (i.e. anybody without a "death wish") choose to be a road cyclist? The roads were made for cars. Wouldn't you feel like a damn fool if you were hit and injured/killed? Wouldn't it be more prudent/sensible to ride your bike on a bike trail?

FAN ... the road was CLOSED for the race! Idiot decided he wanted to drive on that road anyway!
BTW ... Not all people enjoy riding a trail bike.

So is it odd to you that the Tour De France is run on roads closed to cars and not on dirt trails which may not exist throughout the country?
  • "FAN ... the road was CLOSED for the race! Idiot decided he wanted to drive on that road anyway!"
Yes, I understand that. And that's a rare incident.

However, bman90278 wrote "... I've been a road cyclist for many years ..." I contend that "being a road cyclist" is a death wish. The road is for cars (unless closed for a bike race), not bikes.

It's a lifestyle that many people choose and enjoy. It is definitely a lot healthier than driving everywhere, can be a lot of fun and a nice challenge, and does a lot less harm to the environment than driving.

Actually the roads are just as much for bike riders as they are for cars. Both have to obey all the rules
    and laws of the road.

Sorry, that is simply a bizarre contention. Just a few reasons why:
    * Bikes a much slower than cars (and therefore encourage cars to pass over the solid line)
    * Cars are generally on a legitimate mission -- going to work, going shopping, picking up kids, etc, etc, etc
    * Bikes are generally just for exercise/enjoyment -- take your exercise/enjoyment "out of harm's way" (for everybody's sake)

Hey Fanof390...did Tim McCarver teach you all you know about road bicycling?

You seem fairly clueless about it, so it would make sense if he did.

    Massachusetts Laws Pertaining to Bicyclists

Do you know your rights of the road? Do you know what your responsibilities are when biking in Massachusetts? Here is a summary of Massachusetts' bike law that covers equipment, riding, safety standards, races, violations, and penalties. This law applies to all cyclists in Massachusetts -- even you!

For more information regarding cycling and the law, please consult our pages dedicated to Law Resources, Individual State Laws (US) and International Law.

For exact requirements, please read the complete text of the laws pertaining to bicyclists and bicycling in Massachusetts. General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Chapter 85, Section 11a, Chapter 85, Section 11b, Chapter 85, Section 11c, and Chapter 85, Section 11d.

    Your rights

    * You may ride your bicycle on any public road, street, or bikeway in the Commonwealth, except limited access or express state highways where signs specifically prohibiting bikes have been posted.
    * You may ride on sidewalks outside business districts, unless local laws prohibit sidewalk riding.
    * You may use either hand to signal stops and turns.
    * You may pass cars on the right.
    * If you carry children or other passengers inside an enclosed trailer or other device that will adequately restrain them and protect their heads in a crash, they need not wear helmets.
    * You may hold a bicycle race on any public road or street in the Commonwealth, if you do so in cooperation with a recognized bicycle organization, and if you get approval from the appropriate police department before the race is held.
    * You may establish special bike regulations for races by agreement between your bicycle organization and the police.
    * You may have as many lights and reflectors on your bike as you wish.

Your responsibilities: you MUST do these things

    * You must obey all traffic laws and regulations of the Commonwealth.
    * You must use hand signals to let people know you plan stop or turn.
    * You must give pedestrians the right of way.
    * You must give pedestrians an audible signal before overtaking or passing them.
    * You must ride single file unless passing.
    * You must ride astride a regular, permanent seat that is attached to your bicycle.
    * You must keep one hand on your handlebars at all times.
    * If you are 16 years old or younger, you must wear a helmet that meets ANSI requirements on any bike, anywhere, at all times. The helmet must fit your head and the chin strap must be fastened.
    * You must have your headlight and taillight on if you are riding anytime from 1/2 hour after sunset until 1/2 hour before sunrise.
    * You must wear reflectors on both ankles if there are no reflectors on your pedals.
    * You must notify the police of any accident involving personal injury or property damage over $100.

Your responsibilities: you MAY NOT do these things

    * You may not carry a passenger anywhere on your bike except on a regular seat permanently attached to the bike, or to a trailer towed by the bike.
    * You may not carry any child between the ages of 1 to 4, or weighing 40 pounds or less, anywhere on a single-passenger bike except in a baby seat attached to the bike. The child must be able to sit upright in the seat and must be held in the seat by a harness or seatbelt. Their hands and feet must be out of reach of the wheel spokes.
    * You may not carry any child under the age of 1 on your bike, even in a baby seat; this does not preclude carrying them in a trailer.
    * You may not use a siren or whistle on your bike to warn pedestrians.
    * You may not park your bike on a street, road, bikeway or sidewalk where it will be in other people's way.
    * You may not carry anything on your bike unless it is in a basket, rack, bag, or trailer designed for the purpose.
    * You may not modify your bike so that your hands are higher than your shoulders when gripping the handlebars.
    * You may not alter the fork of your bike to extend it.

    Your responsibilities: equipping your bike

    * Your bike must have a permanent, regular seat attached to it.
    * Your brakes must be good enough to bring you to a stop, from a speed of 15 miles an hour, within 30 feet of braking. This distance assumes a dry, clean, hard, level surface.
    * At night, your headlight must emit a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet. A generator-powered lamp that shines only when the bike is moving is okay.
    * At night, your taillight must be red and must be visible from a distance of at least 600 feet.
    * At night, your reflectors must be visible in the low beams of a car's headlights from a distance of at least 600 feet. Reflectors and reflective material on your bike must be visible from the back and sides.

    Penalties

    * Violations of any of these laws can be punished by a fine of up to $20. Parents and guardians are responsible for cyclists under the age of 18. The bicycle of anyone under 18 who violates the law can be impounded by the police or town selectmen for up to 15 days

    --------------------------------------------------

I would assume that every state has some form of the above. I know here in NY we surely do.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Wow,
You don't even want to get me started about Bikes on the roads. My Bumper Sticker says it all:

It has the universal symbol of a Bicycle with a Red Circle and a Slash through it and the words: Share the Road My A$$, Get On The Sidewalk Where You Belong !!!!

I could go on for hours about Bikes on the roads where they don't belong...Ever!!!!!

Live in the mountains and deal with the AHQles who wear there little tight pants BS and ride on our Two lane mountain roads for one day and I guarantee you your tune would change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And don't Give me that BS that they pay taxes and deserve to ride on them just like me. BS...When they pay a License tax on their Bike like I did on my New Truck of $750.00 like me, and hundreds every year, then they can start talking about sharing the Road!!!!

We spent 8 Million Dollars in our Valley from 2004-2007 to construct over 20 miles of Pedestrian/Bicycle paths to connect the three towns near my work and they won't ride on them, they have to be in the Highway!!!!

And don't even get me started about what happens if one of those A$$wipes falls in front of you and you run them over!!!!! Your life is over as you know it!!!!!!!!!

As thedutymon said, "Get off the roads". To make his statement a little more emphatic, let me change it just a bit: Get the hell off the roads, now!
  • And while were having this discussion... Nothing pisses me off more than some jogger running up to a crosswalk button, jabbing it with their finger, and bringing 75 people in 41 cars, three tractor trailers and two motorcycles to a screeching halt!!! Just so they can get on their way to being healthy as they run home to support their favorite tree hugger group. Meanwhile they just used up the equivalent of three sets of brake pads, 15 gallons of fuel and wasted what would equal 2hrs of mantime. Just because they had the right of way.

In my opinion, all bikes, cars, motorcycles, buses and trucks need to get off the road. In Dallas you have a decent chance of getting shot while sitting in your car on the freeway anyways, and there is a 50% chance that the shooter plays for the Cowboys.

Yeah, but if the Shooter played for the Cowboys you'd be safe, cause they couldn't hit the broad side of a Barn !!!!image

WOW, as a runner and cyclist (road and trail) I am amazed at what I am reading. You guys are real tough in your 2000lb cars when driving by a cyclist and swerving towards them (this happens way too often), what is the big deal about a biker on the road? In California we have bike lanes on just about every road, but we still get pushed off the road by idiot drivers who think its funny to swerve towards us. Real tough in your car!

Just like drivers of cars and trucks, some cyclist don't obey the rules, that does not mean we are all bad. I would argue that drivers are far worse the any jogger or cyclist.

As far as mountain roads, I am amazed every ride at the number of cars and trucks that are cutting corners sharp and crossing onto the wrong side of the road. It's a wonder more accidents don't happen. Last year during a ride in the mountains a truck driver had crossed over into the oncoming lane durning a turn and struck a cyclist head on and killed him. All the papers could talk about was how hard it was gonna be for the truck driver to get over it...

There is room for us all on the roads, just slow down a bit and try and enjoy life a little
