Henry Tudor Mania

Inspired by Spoon and having just too much time on my hands, I imaged four of my hammered minors. The first one is a Groat of Henry VII. The next two are Groats of Henry VIII. The fourth is a Half Groat of Henry VIII.

The Henry VII Groat definitely is one of my nicest hammereds. For some reason, I did not note the vendor, but considering the date that I purchased it, I think it was from Dr. Arnold Saslow.

  • Nice ones! I really like the pictures, too. I have yet to figure out how to get a good clean picture of mine.

Honestly, I am not doing much to photograph my coins. I am using a Canon XTi mounted on a tripod. For smaller items, such as these groats, I use a 100 mm lens. I place the set-up opposite a relatively large window area for the maximum daylight. The camera is set for close-up. Unless the sunlight is very bright, the flash pops up. Finally, I have a portable Ott lamp shining on the coin. This usually works well.
If I want a dramatic effect on a silver coin, I place it on a charcoal grey background. Otherwise, these days, I am usually using a white background. Occasionally, a beige background.

  • Well, it looks great! I've tried several different light sources with little luck, I'm beginning to think it could be my coins.image

The white textured background that you used looks good, I think I'll try that next time, thanks.image
