  • NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees reeled in another prime free agent, reaching a preliminary agreement Tuesday with first baseman Mark Teixeira for $180 million over eight years.

A person familiar with the negotiations disclosed the agreement, which is subject to a physical. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet final.

Teixeira's deal raises the Yankees' offseason spending spree to $423.5 million. Just last Thursday, the Yankees completed agreements with two pitchers, giving CC Sabathia a $161 million, seven-year contract and A.J. Burnett an $82.5 million, five-year deal.

The Yankees, preparing to move into their pricey new ballpark, will hold the four largest contracts in the sport. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez has baseball's highest deal at $275 million over 10 years, and shortstop Derek Jeter is second at $189 million over 10 years.

Teixeira's agreement came just one day after the Yankees received a $26.9 million luxury tax bill for 2008, when their streak of 13 consecutive playoff appearances ended.

Boston Red Sox executives met with Teixeira and agent Scott Boras last week and were told they were being outbid. Teixeira, who is from Maryland, also had discussed signing with the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals.

"We would have loved to have had the player, who appealed to us because of the special circumstances of where he's from and where we are. We diverted from our plan to try to get him," said Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail. "But at the end of the day, it was just too much to pay for one player. It would handicap our ability to go forward."

The Los Angeles Angels, who acquired him from Atlanta last season, made an eight-year offer during the winter meetings but withdrew it last weekend.

I'd say the balance of power in the AL East has officially shifted back to where it was before 2004

I love it when the Yankees keep on signing more and more big name guys every year and continue not winning the world series. It's really funny. It's actually like a joke. I am envious of their money they can spend but am glad it's not my team NOT winning the world series. The pressure is on the Yankee's more and more every year!

I agree with whoever said it would be cheaper for the Yankees just to buy the Tampa Bay Rays.

The pressure has ALWAYS been there .... NOTHING NEW

Steve, The Yankees could afford a 1.5 billion dollar pay roll. No Chapter 11 for the Yanks image

Never. We got all this money from the TARP program so now it's like a government backed World Series win.

Chapter 11 doesn't mean the Yankees go out of business...of course not...but the end result will be that a salary cap is finally instituted in baseball, which it should have been done years ago.

New York should not be the center of the universe when it comes to baseball.

The Yankee fans will be defending their payroll all season and than trying to explain why they lost again in October.

<< <i>Why would we need to defend anything? It is what it is. As for October, I always say this and I'll say it again, anything can happen. >>

Including CC choking to death on a Double Whopper then falling over on Teixeira and crushing him to death... Hey It could happen!

Hey good for New York, I respect them for pushing the panic button after last years joke of a season. Tell ya what I will absolutely LOVE it if Texeira has like 9 HRs at the All Star break AGAIN and Burnett is on the DL AGAIN and the Yanks are 10 games back. image

BTW- ALL 3 scenario's are very well possible, however I dont think Big Tex will struggle though, in all honesty it was a good signing for New York and Im jealous.

Paul, do me a favor and look at this seasons overall standings. What "joke" of a season are you talking about? image

  • Well, the Yankees pulled off another swoop in and sign 'em contract. I shouldn't be surprised that they landed him, but I was. Nick Swisher clearly couldn't have been Cashman's answer to Giambi's departure. It was a good move for the Yankees but I don't think they should rest yet. I think there are still some holes they will have to fill. The AL East is going to be a battlefield in 2009.

Oh thats easy Dan, I dont need to check the standings. With the players and payroll the Yankees had last year, 3rd place is a joke.

Alrighty then, in the spirit of that angle the Sox ouster by the financially inept Devil Rays was hysterical.

You can not talk out one side of your mouth blasting the Yankees for not making the playoffs with their payroll even though they had one of the best records in the big leagues without blasting the Red Sox with the second highest payroll in the game who were jettisoned from the playoffs by a team that had a payroll the size of just a few Sox players. Maybe even just two.

Not so much, because the Sox not only made it to the playoffs we made it past the first series. image

I would say the Sox had a "Joke" of a season had we not made it as well.

Edit- I SHOULD have made it clear I was reffering to the Yankees not making it to the playoffs instead of 3rd place..

The Yankees will be a force to be reckoned with next year, especially after they add Manny Ramirez to that lineup.
