A tear of numismatic joy came to my eye, as I read this message from my sister-in-law....
I have written in the past about my nephew who is a budding coin collector. His father is a Lt. Col. in the JAG corp in the Army, and they are stationed out in beautiful and scenic Ft. Irwin, CA. Unfortunately, there are not many coin shops in Ft. Irwin, so I send my old auction catalogs to my nephew occasionally (or, most recently, slipped a few in Mrs. Longacre's bag when she jetted out for his bar mitzvah last month).
For a holiday or special occasion, I like to buy a coin for the boy. For example, for Christmas, I purchased a coin for him. It is nothing excessively rare, but a nice coin. However, because Longacre has been beaten unmercifully by The Man lately, I did not have time to put it in the mail, and he will receive it on the day after Christmas. Because I felt bad, I sent a note to my sister-in-law yesterday, describing the coin, and apologizing for my irresponsibility. Then, I received the following message in response, which brought a tear of numismatic joy to your very own Longacre's eye:
"Thanks [Longacre] - that sounds great! He put more coins on his wish list so this is perfect! Thanks again and see you soon. [sister-in-law]"
I was impressed that the boy would put coins on his wish list. How cool is that? They are moving to Hawaii in the summer for their next assignment, so perhaps I can hook him up with our very own CoinLieutenant (doesn't he live in HI?) to take him on a numismatic tour of the island. (As an aside, Mrs. Longacre already decreed that she is jetting out to Hawaii "several times" to visit her sister, and doesn't quite care about the economic recession

Does your nephew call you, "Uncle Longacre"?

Great news about your nephew, though. Isn't there a coin shop in Barstow?

After all, if we don't get the younger generations interested in coin collecting, who will care for our collections when we pass on?

I have had a “boardroom level” conversation with “the Man.” He has assured me that you will be permitted two lumps of coal for your scribe area stove, and that you will get to use the office chair at least once a day. However, he did not relent regarding your fear of flying clockwise and thus becoming over-tight, so your trip itinerary will not change. You may, he said, have half an hour of personal leave to go skiing in Dubai.
“The Man" seems like a reasonable chap, although I do wonder at your taking employment with someone named “Marley.”
PS: The “magisterial chain of honor” (as he described it) on his office wall is a most unusual decoration. Odd about the redish splatters and the incorporation of a lock…
What was the question?
Tell us, what's on the kid's list? Does he have Longacre tastes or is his interest more in line with the hoi polloi?

Good pick-up. As long as he receives it by next Sunday night, it won't be too late for Hanukah.

Clearly, you're not a slave to the Man, you're a slave to the WOman!
Mrs. Longacre is obviously an astute judge of a future spouse - I hope you feel the same way!

I am presently in Lahaina, Maui.
My wife just found a 2001-D nickel in this beach right where we are staying. Searching for coins is a fun project here in Hawaii. Lots of Hawaii state quarters here too.
Just found three 1969-D dimes and a 1965 quarter, heavily encrusted.

Jewish coming of age ceremony for boys. In the eyes of religion, he is now a man. It doesn't mean that they are considered adults, but that they are now responsible for their own religious responsibilities instead of it being in the hands of the parents.
