Who'd have thought an innocent two-letter typo could be so embarrassing AND hilarious?

Remember that stupid "I before E except after C" rule they teach in spelling?
You know, the rule that shouldn't BE a rule, because there are so many exceptions to it?
That stupid rule cost me the GA state spelling championship in high school, back 1984. If I hadn't been following it, I would have won first place instead of second. A five-letter word tripped me up: W-E-I-R-D. Weird, huh?
It isn't the first time that dumb rule-that-shouldn't-be-a-rule has tripped me up, either (iether?).
It might have helped me this time, though I doubt it applies to German as well as English. If I had typed "I" before "E" HERE, it would have saved some embarrassment, and unintentional comedy.
For those of you who don't speak German (like me), I will only leave you to guess the meaning of the word I accidentally spelled when transcribing the legend on that medal. The funny thing is, I did know that particular word in German, but didn't realize I had made the typo and spelled it that way!
That's possibly better than the time I posted a reply on some thread here, and addressed the forum member "farthing", but for got to type the "h" in his username. Whoops.

BTW, I want to thank you for all the enjoyable articles you have written about your hunts and finds.
I haven't heard how the job situation is for you now . Hope all worked out well for you .
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
I always enjoyed remembering your misspelling of my handle - you have no idea how many times I've typed it the same way as you did, only to catch it before sending an email or response, since I have the same handle on eBay and other chat sites.

<< <i>Lord M, I just had to put a small bid on that. I don't know a thing about German coins but that does have a beautiful obverse. I know I won't win it but maybe it will get more action now that I have expressed an interest in it . Seems that when I like a coin it goes for moon money.

Thanks for the bid, on behalf of my consignor. I don't know the first thing about the medal. Apparently it is a shooting medal of some kind. "Shooting", and not "sh*tting".
<< <i>I know that misspelling! Probably quite appropriate also. >>
I hope not. I wouldn't think of the medal as you-know-what. Looks pretty nice to me.
It is locally known (by some - including my wife) as "Schitzenfaced" which is fairly appropriate!
So, you weren't as far off as you thought!
