Manny to Yanks? NOOOOOOOO!!!!

Oh please let this be a bad dream...

Only the Yankees know how far they'll be willing to go to sign Manny Ramirez, but the slugger believes the Bombers will be a serious contender for his services. According to a source, Ramirez has told friends that he is confident the Yankees will offer him a contract of at least three years, one year longer than most team officials have said they would want to go. Ramirez has no plans to get serious about any offers until after Mark Teixeira - a fellow Scott Boras client - makes a decision regarding his own future. Ramirez has already turned down a two-year, $45 million offer from the Dodgers and has told friends he is seeking a four-year deal in the $100 million range.

I'll be surprised if the Yankees "don't" sign him - they're plodding towards Chapter 11 anyway so what's the difference? It'll just be another voided contract on the books.

"Plodding toward Chapter 11"-Are you not paying attention? They are already a money machine; they will just get richer with the new stadium. They literally have money to burn (not that they will do it). They can waste money on Pavano, Wright, and Giambi, and still have plenty to spend.

I hope the Yankees do sign him. That clubhouse needs some controversy. Madonna-Arod is not enough.

I remember when Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers were "money machines" - it's the Yankees who aren't "paying attention" to the economic conditions out there, thinking it's not gonna affect them?
  • I will comment on the baseball aspect of this, and not the economic aspect of it.

It would bring great drama to the Red Sox- Yankees games to see Manny in them. Imagine his first visit to Boston. Imagine him going out
to left field with a Yankee uniform on. His bat would pay good dividends in the Yankee lineup. In the ninth inning, when Jeter grounds out, Arod strikes out, and Manny doubles, Yankee fans will hail Brian Cashman as a man with great forsight for signing Manny Ramirez.
Oh yeah, Robinson Cano will ground out to second after Manny doubles image

Manny to the Yanks and they will be back in the post season even if their shiny new pitchers don't work out. They probably will be back next season either way truthfully.
  • Please God no, but if it must be then let Manny bust it down the first base line at Fenway EVERY TIME image

Manny would haunt the Sox with pinstripes on image

You know he will do just that too. Of course, he won't break a sweat vs. anybody else, but he'll do whatever he can to destroy Boston.
  • Havent the Yankees learned yet not to keep on overspending on aging sluggers who insist on contracts that are too long??

Knowing the Yankees they'll do something stupid like offer him the 4 years he wants

19 times a year Manny will hustle so well he'll make Pete Rose look like a slug. The other 120 times (he will miss at least 20 games) or so, he'll make a slug look like a better alternative.

I couldn't agree with that more, and I think it's obvious to almost everyone except the "spend money like it's no object" Yankees management.

i predict by the end of the 2009 season, you'll see the New York Yankees team being auctioned off on ebay.

This is getting insane now. Less than a year ago Im touting Manny as being almost at Ted Williams level and solidly picking him as the #2 Sox player ever and now this?

IF Manny signs with New York I will despise him MORE than I despise the New York Yankees and Giants combined which is 100% PURE HATRED.

If he doesnt he will just remain in my top 10 of most despised things in proffesional sports.

  • perkdog, but if it wasn't for ole Manny the Red Sox don't win championships in 2004 and 2007. How can you hate the guy who helped your team get top to the promised land and end the curse?

"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."
  • No doubt about it...no Manny, no rings....he made Big Papi a better hitter.

Yeah, but did he make Curt Schilling, Derek Lowe, and Pedro Martinez better pitchers?

I don't hate Manny, I am disappointed in him. Also, I think he lets himself get manipulated by his wife and, most recently, his agent, plus he obviously is not the sharpest tool in the shed. I actually feel somewhat sorry for him, because he tarnished a HOF career.
  • " Im touting Manny as being almost at Ted Williams level and solidly picking him as the #2 Sox player ever and now this?"

well, it was kind of a stretch :0) Ted Williams frozen head rolled his eyes when you said this the first time around.

Manny to the Yankees only makes sense. He grew up in Washington Heights, not far from Yankee Stadium. Manny has also said long ago, and while in a Red Sox uniform, that he'd like to play for the Yankee's one day. He will follow in the footsteps of Boggs, Rocket and Damon.

Keep in mind that the DH in the American League is a big factor. Manny played like a Manny Incarnate with the Dodgers in order to ensure nice stats for the now on-going bidding war for his "services". Manny well knows that going to a National League team finds him in the outfield in every inning, as opposed to sitting in the dugout and walking to the plate 4 times per game. No fool this Ramirez guy.

True, he was key in the '04 and '07 WS wins for the Red Sox. Nobody cheered more for him than me. BUT, I for one, can never forget how he dogged the team and fans last year as MANRAM went off the deep end and displayed industrial strength hubris. He became a cancer in the clubhouse, indicated by several Red Sox players going to management saying the Manster had to go. Sadly, the Red Sox lost one helluva slugger, but enough, was enough, no mas, no mas.

Manny will become a fan favorite and will hit some serious home runs, but I predict that sooner or later he will eventually go to planet MANRAM, allowing his ego to overtake common sense and he will dog his next team as well.

For sure, Manny going to the Yankees will make for some very interesting visits to Fenway. He has to DH, as the Monstah and left field fans will make his visits to Fenway almost unbearable.

GL Yankee fans, you will soon inherit a ticking time bomb. That Manny being Manny thing will wear thin.

I don't "hate" the guy, there are few things I "hate", but gotta say that Manny was an ENORMOUS disappointment at the end. Everybody knows he laid down on the Red Sox, I've lost all respect for him, and will revel in his upcoming failures at the plate when they occur.

The main reason we won in 2004 was because of Keith Foulke.
The main reason we won in 2007 is because everyone from Mike Lowell, to Manny, to Lester, Beckett, Papelbon, Okie and others contributed.

The most astute Red Sox fan will tell you that Keith Foulke was our MVP in 2004. Others were close, but without Foulke, we had no chance.

I am thankful for what Manny did for us, but after last years bullcrap that he pulled and now he is talking of signing with the Yankees?

Former Sox players have a history of doing this.

    Wade Boggs
    Roger Clemens
    Johnny Damon

just to name the most prominent. I guess you guys can say David Cone?

  • IMO --- Manny is the best, purest slugger out there. I watched him here in Cleveland for a lot of years and he has only gotten better since leaving for the BOSOX. Is he worth a hundred mil tho? Nobody is! That's the difference between today's money ball and yesteryear's baseball legends! As far as the economy goes, the Yankees have a goldmine waiting to be born with all new merchandise and cable network revenue. The seats will be packed and the NY'ers fighting each other to get in --- its a way of life for them!

I don't know if Manny will end up in NY, but I read that the Yankees are going to buy the entire AL so they will know for sure they will make it to the world series. I know that's a joke, but they are certainly loading up this off season. Makes me happy I'm in the NL and even better, the NL West.
