Can mere mortals visit Heritage...

RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
or does one need to be a dealer or collector with a 10-11 figure net worth? I may have occasion to visit Dallas, and I wanted to take a tour and maybe view some auction lots.

I thought you were a Legacy Client, and receive complimentary foot massages at all coin shows that feature Heritage auctions? For a collector of your stature, I would fully expect Jim H. to provide the reflexology sesssion personally.

Schedules permitting, I believe that a visit can be arranged. You should contact your sales representative, consignment director, or customer service, I guess.
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Would it help if I tell them that you are my uncle and that SH Chapman was a distant relative (even though neither is true)? image

Why not ask a preferred dealer or connected friend to call Heritage on your behalf? Frankly, I was hoping that you could get me in the door.

I just learned that a visit to the American Girl store might preclude visiting Heritage.

Funny, I was going to suggest that admission could be purchased with a promise of no fewer than ten threads about the trip (pre-approved, of course). image

If The Man ever decides that he no longer requires the services of Longacre, I am going to open up one of these stores. The one in NYC makes a MINT. It's quite a racket when you have to pay to have lunch with your doll. image

Julian is FULL SERVICE, and he just might take the wife and kids to the American Girl store. One year in Baltimore, I was complaining that I had to catch a flight home on the same day, and Julian graciously offered to get Mrs. Longacre on the phone right then and there, and tell her that I was staying over and would be home the next day. Now that's full service. image

They gave me a tour, which pretty much means they will give anyone a tour.....
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image
  • ...on a more 'serious' note... perhaps, if you bring Longacre's collection of green-beaned coins to consign to one of their auctions, they will probably spring for lunch AND have one of their people take the ladies to the American Girl store... image

As long as you have a business case for the visit or an existing relationship, provided the personnel are available, I would think they would accommodate you. A phone call is all it takes to find out. Not sure what's to see there. Maybe they are running preview lot viewing at their offices for FUN now?

Well, Longacre must have pulled a few strings for me because they have offered me a tour of the facility. Knowing Longacre's reputation in the numismatic community, I suspect that I will get to see wonders the likes of which I can only dream and imagine. Pending Julian's travel arrangements to cover the American Girl store visit, I will visit Heritage and report what I can back to the forum.

I have made a few trips to the 17th floor. The first time 5 years ago my friend and i actually thought Heritage was a coin store. LOL We were bored with the few coin stores in Fort Worth and went to Dallas. We looked in the yellow pages and found Heritage under coins. So we found the building and went inside. We were directed up to the 17th floor. We excited the elevator and saw a receptionist behind 12 inch bullet proof glass. You pick up the phone and tell her what you want. Anyway they sent out a nice guy and he kind of had a chuckle at our expense ( thinking they were a coin store). So we talked for a few moments in a glassed in office and he dssapeared somewhere into a back office and came back with a ms65 1893 "s" , seems like a ms66 1889 cc and 1895 proof morgan dollar along with 2 or 3 other coins. He let us look at them and made a little light conversation. They brought us a soft drink and 20 pounds worth of catalogs. He (Heritage) knew we could not afford those coins but they were super nice to us.

I have since made a few more trips to Heritage to actually sell them some coins. THEY paid me greysheet or better on prices on 3 different occassions. I have a few coins in the up coming auction.

The one thing they have never done to me is knock the coins i was selling. They were very professional in every way and i would not hesitate using them again if the need arises.

I would expect that you RYK will get the red carpet treatment since you are Longacres friend and a writer for Doug Winter. You may even get to eat lunch with Halperin and Ivy with out having to pay.image

Acually, they give anyone a tour, not just RYK, and all you have to do is call them up.

If you are a legacy client, you can store your coins in there client vaults for free.

I am and that's very nice, but it would be a real PITA to have to travel to Dallas every time I want to visit my coins, add/subtract some to/from storage, etc. It's not like I am some Longacre that can hop on a private jet whenever I please. image

They have nice lunch buffets in the auction viewing room.

Thanks for the reply, Greg. I have already contacted Todd I about my visit and (if I can just get Julian to commit to the American Girl outing image ) look forward to landing at the Big H™.
