Football Card Question (missing star players from sets)

I was looking through my Unitas collection and referred back to an old SMR. I noticed that Topps produced a 63 Card of Unitas and did not in 64 and 65. Is there any history of why this occured? Did players choose whom or which card they would be seen? Just curious.

  • Topps lost the NFL license to produce cards after 1963. Philadelphia Gum won a 4 year contract 1964-1967 tp produce NFL cards. You'll find Unitas cards there. Topps won the AFL contract from Fleer for 1964-1967 and produced AFL cards. In 1968 Topps won both leagues and produced the first "unified" set.
