Declared value on submissions

I'm going to submit some cards for grading, it's my first time to do that. The form says it needs the declared value of the card. How do I know what that would be? Just make something up?

I would like to know the same thing! Say you have a 1960 Topps Mickey Mantle worth $600 can you declare its value at $100 to get the different package and save money?
  • If its commons or cards valued under $100/$75, I won't put to much thought into it. You can put just about anything down.

Cards valued higher, I normally take try and figure the grade (say NRMT or PSA 7) and then take SMR vaule (1956 Topps PSA 7 #1 Ted Williams $500) and fly with it. But if its right on the cusp between service levels, I might drop the value just a bit to submit at the lower costing level.

    Hope this helps

I don't think PSA would let you submit at a $15 or less card level.

The declared value is for insurance purposes.. sometimes I don't put a declared per card value.. just a total declared value
depending on return costs.. usually I put $10 per card.. Mantles included
I may but $100 or so, but yes you can declare less for the cheaper service for grading... but not reviews..

I'm sure they will accept it. I've had cards of that value in bulk subs. Just hope it doesn't get lost or damaged. Your risk, not PSA.

  • I have a bunch of cards I've had since I was a kid. Some from 75, 76, that era. I went through them and picked out 13 that are in pretty good condition, and big named players. Pete Rose, Hank Aaron, those kind. If I declare the value of them as less than $100 each, does that mean if they get lost in the mail that's how much I can get for them? Assuming they are insured.

Since they are worth about $100 all together, I think you are safe giving them a value of less than $100. I usually guess if I am not fairly certain of the Beckett BV.

I've shipped & received many thousands of USPS insured cards! And I only had just a few lost or damaged in the mail (even when packed well) over the past decade. (USPS has been really cool!)

BUT BEWARE MOST OF MY LOSSES WERE AROUND THE XMAS HOLIDAYS!!!

    Just a heads-up!

Even if you declare a low "per card value", you can ship them to PSA REGISTERED/INSURED this time of the year!.

Better safe than sorry! (PSA ships return items registered also, you think they know something? LOL!) image

  • I've wondered about this one as well. A good example: Say I've got a 1962 Topps Sandy Koufax card #5. I look at the card and I think... "This card could be graded as a 6 or 7 - Really hard to tell". If I declare that the card is under $100 (as a 6 would probably be), and it gets the higher grade, does PSA charge more?

Powdered NO they will not. At least in the specific case you asked about. However say the card you think is a 7
turns out to be a 9 and gets damaged while in transit back to you. You have declared its value as 100.00 when in fact
it is now a 1000.00 dollar card. Return insurance is what you also must consider. Registered mail is the safes and most secure
    but shirt happens.

As for what Oaksey said above that works too, however don't be surprised if one day you get a call
from them and they want more money.

    Good for you.
