Beautiful coin. According to Krause 258,00 of the original 500,000 coins minted were returned to the royal mint to be melted. Nice piece. Where did you obtain it and are there more available?

They are very interesting, I have one of the proof Rupees, but haven't found a 5 Rupees yet.

I sent this one in to NGC where it made PF67.

According to my records, I purchased it about 4 years ago from some vendor (G.B.I.E. Coins) with whom I was friendly. At the time, I was thinking of putting together a few Asian crowns and this piece fascinated me.

I'm a big fan of coins, AND tea.

I still a need 1901 Ceylon half-cent and 1-cent piece for my daughter's 1901 Victorian type set.

What a cool token. (The design in the coin in the OP is very cool too, of course. I've always liked it, for its "Noah's Ark" feel).

What are the people on that token doing? Just generally trading stuff?

The Cingalese silver 5 Rupees is not a common coin at all.I had been after one for around 10 years before I finally got one for my collection of British Commonwealth coins.

The 1957 1 Rupee coin is common as muck,as it was put into circulation as a currency coin.
