The perp had a secure USPS job. Theft is one of the few ways to get fired. Greed and stupidity. Now he will likely join the legions of unemployed persons in the Detroit metro area.

hope he gets canned, fined and possibly jail time,

probably with his union job, a slap on the wrist and 6 months job probation (with pay)!!

  • One Crook down....image Stealing items is not only the only thing some of the bad apples in the USPS do they also attempt to steal your identity by opening up your mail from credit card companies and the bank as they did mine many a times. Had to cancel a couple of cards for that matter.

I have to disagree with this statement. I work for the PO and the union is very weak. In the plant where i work, over the 30 years that i have been there, i have seen five or six people walked out because they were stealing items from the mail. None of them ever came back-One person had over 28 years in and was less than 2 years from retirement-(i know-what an idiot!). She not only lost her job but also her pension.
The union will not defend theft-when you are caught stealing at the PO-you are caught-they usually have plenty of proof and you lose your job immediately.

Unions that ensure fair wages, consistent cost of living increases and appropriate discipline procedures from management are terrible?

Frankly, organized labor is one of the most patriotic things going. Sure, it can be abused like anything else, but the idea is certainly one with noble roots and overwhelmingly positive implications for our little Republic. Are some auto workers getting more than they deserve? Absolutely. But the Constitution lets you burn a flag, too. You'll never have one without the other.

I totally agree with the two statements above. There seems to be a very common and very erroneous perception on this forum about the frequency of theft in the Postal Service. I worked there for 33 years and retired five years ago. Theft was very uncommon and the few that were thieves were fired with no recourse whatsoever. And they almost invariably DO get caught.

You have a point. The unions are going to get the American people to pay for the failures they cause. The bailout has nothing to do with the automakers, just the unions.

Well, sometimes. I was a member of the National Education Association for some years and heard rumors
about grossly inflated salaries and fringe benefits for the “leadership.” So I asked for a list of the top 10
people for their overall packages. In 12 years (!) of asking I got exactly nothing except to be told it was “none of
your business” or “someone might find out and publish it.”

I think it is wonderful a crook was caught and I hope he is made to pay. I personally dont like unions. However, I dont see how a crook postal worker and his union have anything to do with the mess the unions have been part of in Detroit.

I was serious, the guy lives 4 houses away and I thought he was a good guy. Been riding his bike since 2003 due to an OWI 3rd and was soon eligible to restore his driving privileges. Had some issues with his X a few months ago. She was gonna try and take his daughter and move outta state. The guy was a mess, I told him I couldn't get involved without some serious upfront $ and he said he was gonna crack if she took his daughter away from him...I guess maybe he did...

What really gets me steamed is that this person probably felt a sense of entitlement based on opportunity. This is a plague in our society. Cops and politicians (gee is that Illinois mayor a poster child for it?) are the most visible (and no, I am not generalizing here) but it affects so many everywhere you look. You trust enough people at a cash register and some will finger the till for themselves. Security professionals will take surveillance footage (which is not theirs) and sell it it it has a celebrity in it.

Well, it will probably be him moving as it's a foregone conclusion he's fired and will probably lose his house.... I thought he told me he'd worked there something like 15-20 years. I've handed over plenty of packages to him when he was working the counter...If I see him I'll for sure hittem with a snow ball, we got over a foot and more on the way...

Here's a clip from the story:

William A. Perko entered Michigan's G&S Brokers pawn shop and sold some gold for $320. According to the Detroit News, the shop's jeweller, James Zelinske, recognised the gold because he had melted it himself and just sent it off to another Michigan business. As a result of the incident, the 43-year-old Perko has been arrested for stealing outgoing mail from the Mount Clemens post office, where he works as a mail processor.

I just posted my own example at the PM forum of what may be a similar USPS theft.

A 1 kilo bar made it successfully from Australia to the USA only to get lost at an USPS sorting facility. The USPS dutifully forwarded an empty package with an attached a notice apologizing for any inconvenience.

The explanatory notice is titled "We Care". image Hopefully the ebay seller's Australia Post insurance coverage will make them whole.

This scum is from Detroit? Doesn't surprise me a bit. The worst criminal scum is in Detroit. Decent people have been fleeing Dumptroit for
over 40 years. The criminal scum have free reign in this wasted land. No one wants to investigate crime. No one wants to impose any
sentencing on the garbage that might get caught . This is a cursed trash city and it's in need of absolute destruction. It is a bad disease
set upon the earth by Satan himself.

Anyone wanting to see what the 3rd world is like - come visit Detroit. But don't come after nightfall. image

Union or not-you get caught stealing-you're gone. And prosecuted. Same with selling drugs. I saw it happen a few times in my 33 years there.
