PSA Card Review Process with Great Results!

I just wanted to share my recent experience with the card review process.

Basically, I had a PSA 7 card that I felt should have been graded an 8 and thought there was nothing to do about it. But, after seeing another example graded an 8 that I felt was inferior, I decided to contact Joe Orlando with supporting info (scans).

He replied within minutes of my message and offered to have my card reviewed... this occurred last week and he just called me a few moments ago to discuss in detail the overall grading/review process. He took the time to explain that my circumstance was in the "tweener" category, the grade could go either way... luckily, the review grader agree with me and assigned the card an 8.

I must say for those who don't know already, Joe being a former collector really does care and takes the time to treat people fairly. He went on to say that the grade review (increase to an 8) was justified and that had there been a problem with the card (deserved the 7) it would have remained a 7.

If you have cards that you feel are "tweeners," I would suggest you contact Joe (but make sure they don't have problems and that the current grade assigned is correct).

Thank you, Joe!

Mike

I'm happy for you, but not happy about the randomness of the system.

"I'm happy for you, but not happy about the randomness of the system." ...good point, but should we expect every grader to agree on the grade for every card, every time?

Here are the photos, I don't have my card back yet showing an 8... just search the cert and verify it is now an 8 if you like:

This is why I believe CU should add a service (for a small fee) that would let you know the soft points of a graded card that concerned the grader(s).

I wanted to start by saying congrats and hope that it is that way for everyone here on the boards!! But, I do have to question this reasoning. If they felt this was a "tweener" then isn't that what the 1/2 point system they implemented supposed to take care of? No matter what the other card received, shouldn't they be grading your card on it's individual merits and not by what another card received... which may well have been overgraded?
Again, not knocking your card but it just seems to go against why they put the new grading into place.
    Oh yeah, and happy Holidays!

  • if it was an in between, wouldnt it be a 7.5? was the centering holding back the grade?

This case is pretty open and shut. The card I'm assuming has solid 8/9 type corners. It was probably originally chopped due to centering. Upon review the centering meets the minimum for 8 and gets the bump. PSA has no down side. The card goes from a nominal valued card to a $35-$45 card.

sagard, I couldn't agree with you more... I do believe the same results would have occurred for a more expensive card.

FYI, originally the card was graded prior to .5 change... my argument if you will and supporting scans was for an 8 bump (not a 7.5).

If not for the centering, the card is a 9... corners, back, ect are mint.

Why do we have .5 grades??? If a card is a "tweener" then what does the half grade standard cover. Please don't say centering... There are many badly centered .5's on ebay right now . So basically some get bumps some do not. While I am very happy that SOMEONE or anyone for that matter was happy with reviews-I am 0-6 and 5 of the 6 were not even close to "tweeners" but grossly undergraded. If you dont think that the value of the cards plays into the grade you are not being realistic.

Once again I am happy for you but not happy with how you had to get your card into that holder.

  • you see how opinions work. They change from day to day.It kinda sucks if you get the bad day.Thats why I stay with raw because i am the grader. If i say its mint its mint and im happy. As i said before it takes no skill to grade cards.Im not going to jump through hoops to get someone to agree with me that I have a mint card. Its the same story day after day.UGh

It may be easy to grade but authenticating and checking for some alterations can be tricky.

Also, when selling raw will not achieve the optimum results.
