Mary Queen of Scotland Portrait Penny (1547)

Penny or 1d Type I (1547) undated, with infant head of Mary
Pennies in 90 percent bronze and 10 percent silver were the first of very few coins struck in Scotland bearing a portrait of Mary, this as an infant. This particular coin is from the first coinage with the portrait of Mary with an arched crown, a particularly rare coin, struck in small quantities, and one of the few with Mary crowned on a coin. The legend on the front of the coin is + MARIA D G R SCOTORVM whilst the reverse is OPIDVM EDNBVR.

What is OPIDVM? I'm used to seeing CIVITAS for "mint", but "Opidum" is a new one on me.

Actually Oppidum in Latin loosely translates to "settlement" or enclosed area ie area. Civitas means city, so London would see that on their coins while Berwick is Villa Berwicii or village of Berwick.

So CIVITAS = "city". OK, makes sense. I thought it meant "mint", since it is usually associated with a city name, i.e. "CIVITAS LONDON" or whatever. So a coin with "CIVITAS LONDON" is saying "City Of London", in effect, not "London Mint".
Thanks for the enlightenment.
That's one very nice Scots coin that you have got there.

In the next few weeks I will be dropping out of all numismatic forums as I withdrawal from significant venues in my collecting pursuits in anticipation of easing into my next sphere of interests which will be much more rewarding. I am keeping the Scottish coins, but all else, the USA stuff, Russian stuff, ancients, banknotes etc. are on the block.
