Does PCGS Have the Right To.....

Maybe this has been brought up before, but if it was I missed it.

Display sets in their registry which they did not slab? Like the Eliasberg sets? NGC slabbed the better part of that collection, so shoudn't they have the roghts to it and not PCGS?

What do you think?

  • PCGS will list the Eliasberg pedigree when you crossover the coin. But I see your point on including it in the Registry since very few of the coins are part of the PCGS universe. Aren't the Eliasberg sets asterisked as having coins with "estimated" grades. Maybe an NGC coin is an estimated grade.

  • Anything that's not graded by PCGS is given an " estimated " grade , but I don't think they do this for anyone except NGC . Imagine the sets we could have for ACG ! I really thought everything was supposed to be PCGS , though. Maybe this doesn't apply to " high Dollar " sets. image

  • I don't think they're making any claim to having graded it... I think the Eliasberg collection is such a benchmark that they wanted to include it for comparison.

Their estimate for the Eliasberg gold type set is grossly under estimated. The catalog estimates were in most cases 1 to 2 points lower than the grades later assigned by the grading services.
  • What if NGC wants to have the Eliasberg sets in their registry, should PCGS have to delete them?

In the set registry rules they say:

"All Time Finest and Current Sets

Each set listed as current is comprised of PCGS coins certified in
accordance with our usual standards. Many of the “All-time finest”
sets are comprised of PCGS coins, while others predated PCGS and
were made up of uncertified coins. For these pre-PCGS sets, the
grades have been estimated by our expert contributors and listed
    with an asterisk(*)".

Thus, one must conclude that they consider the Eliasberg sets to be in this category and don't care if another service graded the coins. It would be interesting to see if the PCGS assignments align with the NGC grades.

Their grades on the gold are low? Well, they're making up for it on the proof trade dollars! I bought almost half of Eliasberg's proof trades from 73-83 at the sale and PCGS would not cross a single one. The only coin that PCGS would even 66 is the 1877 (which is an NGC 67). They have them all listed as 66CA - not a single one was cameo! I just don't know where they got these grades.image
