Buying cards to grade

I have a dumb question - are rack packs worth buying or are wax the only way to go - which is more likely to have been opened and resealed? is BBCE still the best place to purchase - There seems to be so many rack packs and grocery packs on e-bay its confusing

Rack packs will prolly yield the nicest cards but they too could have been searched.

    Edited to add:

I would not hesitate buying from BBCE.

What Steve said. I have got the best quality cards from racks.

Problem is, they are sequenced just like wax packs are.

  • Whats the differance between rack packs and grocery rack packs - any good way to see if they are tampered with

If you're looking for vintage STAY AWAY from the Christmas grocery rack packs of vintage. They're all bogus. Finding a fake one of those is like finding hay in a haystack.

Besides those Christmas rack packs, I dont think many other racks packs are really tampered with.

A good scammer knows the sequence of cards in the rack and will know what cards are most likely in it just by looking at the front and back cards.

That said, they just keep that rack and send you another one.
  • Loose racks and grocery racks very rarely yield high grade cards. If you are buying a full box or case that you truly believe to be unsearched, then racks are often a good bet. I have had similar luck with wax packs but only from packs that came from a fresh box.

I buy almost all of my unopened stuff from BBCE and from a few forum users (BobS and RonBurgundy are two I have bought from with nice success).
