    I like the coin but I don't collect this series. Can somebody educate me and explain how the toning shadows on the date and the letters of "United States of America" can be created? image

    Those 'toning shadows' are a consequence of metal flow when the coin is die-struck under high pressure. I am not aware of anyone taking a coin and doing analytical work on it, but the metal atoms/ions in those patches are evidently more resistant to chemical reactions associated with toning. These kinds of shadows are most often seen when looking at toned Morgan dollars.
