Matte Proof Lincolns for the week of 12/12

Looks like a couple of MPLs did not sell at the Heritage Auction. A 1909 and 1911- they were listed with BIN prices and now they are gone! Heritage also pulled two the four 1914 mattes that were originally listed for the Fun show and moved them up to a Dec 16th Tuesday night auction. Plus they added a few more Mattes for the Fun Show. So we still have 47 to choose from, just 3 less than last week.

Till next week.

Brothers, seeing all these MPLs for sale makes this old man think that the saturation point is at hand. Let's see if there are enough collectors to absorb them.

Personally I think it's all about quality, not quantity, which is why some of the items did not do well in the Houston Heritage Auction.

I don't see this item on Heritage's site, can someone point out where it is?

Thanks, I erased the 1913 Dupe.

As far as the 1909, its the one with onlya picture and no information showing on the "Coming soon" to auction list.

And it looks like the 64BN PCGS 1914 is the one at the Tuesday Night Auction, not the 65RB NGC version.

I love it when a 1909VDB MPL shows up at auction. This time we will have TWO at FUN, both in NGC slabs and graded PF64RB & PF65RB. The images aren't anything to write home about and I doubt that they will trade at current PCGS market values of $37.5k and $50.0K respectively. These examples of the VDB MPL are "considered" currently the "higher tier" of this rare coin. That is, every 64 or higher graded coin is valued at $30k or more. My take is that such coins are only going to trade among those collectors with significant financial resources and as such those collectors will be very discriminating about actual condition. My guess is that neither of these coins will draw significant bids and the question of whether or not they sell will depend on what size reserves are placed on these coins by their current owners. Frankly speaking, both NGC VDBs are visual dogs. In fact, I can hear them barking. The 64 is actually prettier than the 65! My estimate: $20-$25K each.

Yes I think its a quality issue too. I watched one of the 09 65RD's....and what a bum looking coin it was. Abe was a dark smudge...how that coin was RD I dont know.

All in all though, to dig up 50 coins for sale out of a total PCGS and NGC pop of what, 3500 or so (I forget the total) does not exactly seem out of place.

    Ray,
The "official" pop numbers as of March 18, 2008 was:
    PCGS-2,577; NGC-1,431: ANACS-791; TOTAL-4,799.
I will do an update after the first of the year.

how much do you knock off the total for crackouts/resubmissions..25%? Does one TPG notify the other one ATS when there's a crossover?

Totally saturated, Curly. But there are still a few nice coins going off at FUN - A sweet '14 with a little concentric action. I'd take it coin over either VDB in a heartbeat. 1914 PR65 Red and Brown NGC PR65. Easy cross at 65, depending on the look in-hand. The 1909 66 Red is very nice, as well. I've seen it.

    Happy Holidays!

The two 1914's in Heritages tuesday night auction did quite well last night. The PCGS PR64BN went for $1,265 blowing away the PCGS price guide value of $575 and the PCGS PR64RB went for $1,610 about 10% over the current price guide of $1,500. From the images I didn't think either coin had any toning worth mentioning. I bid close to these levels sight-unseen just off the images that looked mostly carbon/problem free.

High end MPL's in PCGS holder's should continue to do well price wise. There are a decent number of MPL cents on the market but its tough to find a PQ specimen because a high percentage of them do not meet this category. This is the reason you see huge swings in price for MPL cents that are of the same date/grade and holder. (imo)
