Mets choke artists!

NEW YORK (AP) - Phillies ace Cole Hamels called the New York Mets "choke artists" in an interview on the Mets' flagship radio station Thursday, becoming the latest star to stoke the rivalry between the NL East powers.

Philadelphia has rallied past the Mets to win the division title in each of the last two seasons, and Hamels won the World Series MVP award when the Phils won the championship this year.

When asked by one of the hosts on WFAN if the Mets were choke artists, the left-hander agreed.

"Last year and this year I think we did believe that," Hamels said. "Three years ago we didn't because they smoked everybody, and I really thought that was the year they were going to go to the World Series. Unfortunately it didn't happen.

"That's kind of what we believe and I think we're going to always believe it until they prove us wrong."

Hamels didn't back off when asked to repeat his comments.

"Yeah, for the past two years they've been choke artists," he said.

It's not easy choking the way the Mets did the past two seasons. It takes determination, effort, and hard work. Mets fans should be proud of their team being recognized for an achievement, and their fans should be thankful in this economic climate that they don't have to spend money on things such as playoff tickets and champagne.

I read it last night and thought it was pretty cool...It really surprizes me that SteveK didn't post it first.

What do you guys think is going to happen the first time Cole Hamels steps up to the plate against the Mets in '09?

Ya think he just made this rivalry a little more intense? LOL

Stay healthy (yeah, even the Phillies Phans!)

Yup. Howver, if they choke in '09, they will really have outdone themselves.

But, they can alway relish that World Series given to them by Calvin Schrialdi.
  • This level of trash talk goes way beyond what Rollins said. I suspect that it will just fire the Mets up and will come back to bite the Phillies in the azz.

he was goaded into it by the 660 am guys, that being said, it's the truth.

every year we have to hear how good the mets are and how they're going to kick everyones butts, and every year they suck and are proven to have ZERO heart.

Imagine the dances they'll have around the plate with KRod, Delgado and Reyes circle humping eachother when they score 10 runs against the Giants and Nationals of the world. well worth the price of admission. but in september, they'll swoon.

So you think that losing your closer is not a big deal? Where do you think the Phillies wind up if they lost Brad Lidge? Since it would NOT have been first place, would you say that the rest of the team had no heart? I think not.

when wagner is HEALTHY he BLOWS SAVES. the mets come up small in all situations down the stretch (with the exception of Santana, who is a bonafide stud). key defensive failure, key walk given, key strikeout. the failures of the bullpen are just part of the systemic problems the team has. they're a bully team, classic front runners, if they pummel you, they'll beat you by 10 runs. if you can keep it close, the mets will find a way to lose, esp in September.

maybe that'll change, maybe it wont, but historically, this core of the mets squad as proven they'll come up short down the stretch when it counts. what's that intangible?? you DONT call it heart? maybe it's just bad luck. same bad luck they have over and over! how crazy!

Gotta love the dictionary's definition of choke:

<< <i>to lose one's composure and fail to perform effectively in a critical situation <had a chance to win the game but he choked >>

I listened to the whole interview Hamels had with Benigno and the hack Evan Roberts. Hamels has his head screwed on very very straight. He was having fun and showed a great personality throughout the interview.

Anybody who is riled up about these remarks DID NOT LISTEN to the interview.

But hey, whatever it takes to stir it up right?

Does anyone think the Mets should really pay one iota of attention to what Cole Hamels says? I sure hope they don't. Worry about winning the division, not what some guy says in a radio interview. And let's face it, only winning the division will be the only way to shut him up.

I'm tired of focusing on the Phillies. It's time we took care of our house, and damn the rest of the NL!

Yeah you shouldn't care about the team that's bested you 2 years in a row and just won the world series.
