The latest from Peter "Red Sox" Gammons blog today,

<< <i>John Smoltz wants to come back for another season. He is throwing and thinks he will be ready early next season. The Red Sox have been given his medicals and videos. The feeling is that Boston might be a good fit. >>

I think that would be great chance for Smoltz to get another ring. As a baseball purist, I would love to see him retire as a Brave.

  • out of curiousity, as a baseball purist, do you still prefer the underhand pitching to be used?
  • Hoopster, you don't need to be a d*ck all the time, try being nice - who knows, you might like it.

As far as Smoltz, I understand the feeling of not wanting to see him pitch for a different team, but things happen. Regardless of how well (or bad) he does in Boston, he'll always be remembered as a Brave. Think about it, does anyone remember Harmon Killebrew as a Royal?

I wouldn't have a problem with Smoltz getting another ring on the Sox and that would be a great way to finish a great career. I'm just remembering how lucky I was as a kid growing up in the 70's. Yes it was still rare to have a player play an entire career in one place, but it was still common to have a player make a good run in one place. Where today's kids rarely get to have a player on their team for anything longer than a contract or two...Yes there are some exceptions, but not as common as it once was. And to Hoopster..LOL

I heard Hoopster did not go to work today and he won't be spending any money today either. image

    It's cool Hoopster
  • This would suck miserably for me. Not only would he not retire a Brave but I would have to cheer against him when he pitches against the Rays! WTF SMOLTZY?!

At least the Braves once resided in the city of Boston so it's sort of like finishing his career where it all started. (Weak, I know, but you know I won't be the last person to bring up this point if he signs with the Red Sox.)

Sorry, my fault, I didn't read it that way. No worries!

One other aspect of Smoltz playing next year is it ruins the fantasy of him, Maddux & Glavine all going in the H.O.F. together, although some might argue Smoltz isn't first ballot material (I am not among them).

Good one Goot. I would say that the Rays will always lose at least one game every series against the Sox. Just tell the Rays to always make their one loss when it's Smoltz pitching. lol

I don't think signing Smoltz is the answer we need. Yes he brings a lot of leadership to the table but so didn't Schilling and look at how his contract played out for us last season... I'd much rather go after Brian Fuentes and take the sure shot of a kid reaching his prime to shore up the bullpen and give Papelbon a break from having to come in with 0 room for error. If Fuentes got thrown into the 8 hole I could see Pap's ERA dropping by almost half a point and probably getting 5 more saves per season.
