what a joke... I hope the Spankees love Choke Choke Sabathia when it comes to the playoffs.

They're not going to even make the playoffs unless they have someone like him pitching during the regular season, so I'd imagine they'll be happy with whatever he does once he's there.

I'm also an Indians fan, and he was kindof a jerk before he left. So put Sabathia IN New york, and it makes me double-dislike them. What's life without hating the Yankees anyway? It's like breathing! Keeps us alive! image

Congrats! You got a great big game pitcher with a sterling American League playoff record! I predict at least a third place finish in the East next year. Go CC! Go Yankees! Woohoo!!!

Toronto just called, they said thrid place is theirs!
  • Insane amount of years for him. Seven year deal?!

Yankee fans, I hope you have been saving, or that somehow all the stocks you have had actually went up, while every one else's have gone down...because it is going to cost you guys a bundle the next several years to go to games.

    Ouch.

CC will opt out after 3 years because he won't like it in New York and leave tens of millions of dollars on the table. The very fact that they have that clause built into his contract speaks volumes about CC's desire to play for the Yankees.

my understanding was that Sabathia was going to have the three year opt out clause in the contract NO MATTER WHICH TEAM signed him.

Smart business decision by the player and agent. What if the market shifts radically in the next three years and someone like Sabathia is a $30 million/year player?

I can definitely see the benefit of having that clause but after 3 years I think the only change will be that he is 3 years older, probably 30 pounds heavier, and more likely will be a $12 million per year pitcher.

egads.... come on guys. Yankee hating is indeed a sport itself but PLEASE do just a little homework before throwing up at the mouth.

  • And just how should we do homework on predictions 3 years out? Obviously, what I said was nothing more than conjecture which is all part of the fun of the hot stove. You are fooling yourself, however, if you think that CC was excited about playing in New York. I'm not saying it's the Yankees he has a problem with, I'm saying he was reluctant to make the lifestyle change required by living in New York. How many other players do you know of that have clauses in their contract that will let them walk away from about 100 million if they don't like playing for the team?

I agree that I dont think that CC really is looking forward to pitching in NY. I dont care if he likes it or not as long as he does what he is getting paid to do. Is there an opt out for the Yankees after that 3 years? 7 years for a pitcher is waaaaaaaaayyyyy too long. About 4 years too long.

But the Yankees hatred runs ramped here LOL CC signs with anyone else for that money and the team would have been genius! But personally, Im not thrilled about the signing but only in terms of 7 years.

Yankees better handcuff their own trainer and nutritionist to CC though. The only time the handcuffs come off is when he is in the gym or during the games!

Forget Derek Lowe...Pettitte is much better suited to come back. I would also like to see the Yankees get Ben Sheets. And forget AJ. While he is a gamer when he's healthy, he is just going to be another Pavano. Thanks but no thanks AJ.

What I would like to see as the Yankees 5 starters:
    Wang
    Sabathia
    Sheets
Chamberlain or Hughes (if Chamberlain is determined to be better in the BP)
    Pettitte

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE trade Ian Kennedy! He's a head case!!!!

skinny pitchers break down, don't they? The ones with some meat on the bones hold up pretty well. Someone must have stats on this?

Yankeeno7 - No love for Lowe? I would think he'd be a great addition to the Yankees. He's a ground ball pitcher, he's got a proven track record, he's got playoff experience, and he is durable. He's started at least 32 games in the last 7 seasons. Whereas Sheets has only started that many games 4 times in the last 7 years (3 of those seasons being 2002, '03, and '04). And AJ Burnett has only started 32 games twice in his career.

It just seems like the Yankees need reliability more than flash at this point. That's just my opinion, but if I was a GM and I had to sign free agent pitchers to multi-year deals, durablity would be at the top of my checklist.

Von, you are right. I just looked at Lowe's numbers over the past 3 years and they are actually quite impressive. Wang does really well as a ground ball pitcher in NY and I think Lowe could have the same success. Yeah, now that I take a good look, I do like Lowe. Why was I thinking his ERA was high 4's? LOL

I could go for either Sheets or Lowe. Ive just always enjoyed watching Ben Sheets pitch. He has a great pitching style and I like his power. I know he is more risky as far as health concerns go but I would still like to see him with the Yankees if they get him for the right price.

Edited to add: Looks like Sheets will only be a 2 year contract. That is pretty attractive to take a risk on a guy who can throw like that. Certainly better risk than Burnett! I just want to see Pettitte in the rotation. He isnt done yet!

Wow, I love it! Another bone-headed move by the brilliant Yankee front office!

Signing these overrated, "big-name" players has traditionally kept the Yankees out of winning anything. Their last period of dominance (the late 90's) came from a team largely built from their farm system. You know, an actual team.

Plus, Sabathia's weight and poor playoff pitching history would worry me if I was a Yankee fan. As it stands now, adding this guy to the Yankee staff doesn't scare me one bit as a Sox fan.

Now signing Texiera, that would bother me. But hopefully he will use his common sense and come to Boston.

It would be absolutely comical to watch Lowe in NY. One inning he'd be pouting because Jeter would turn his inning ending DP into a base hit. Next inning he'd be pumping it up as Jeter gets on and leads to a five run Yanks inning. Only to repeat the process.

I'll predict a full run addition to Lowe's ERA if he comes back to the AL East. These aren't NL West ballparks he would be pitching in.

Sabathia will be a big help to the Yanks for a minimum of four of the seven years on that contract. Sure makes the Met's look like they got a bargain in Santana.
