2009 Collecting Goals

I am currently working on my buying plan for 2009 and thought I would share my goals for next year. I did a pretty good job acomplishing my 2008 goals and look forward to knocking off more of my HOF and Superstar collections in 09.

In Baseball, I want to knock off my 30 card collections for 1962, 1965, 1967, 1981 & 1982. This would bring my run to 1959, 1961-1985. In order to finish this I need 10 cards for 1962 including Maris, Brock, Clemente, Koufax & Aaron. In 1965 I need 22 of 30, though I think my wife will get me a few for Christmas. For 1967 I just need the Seaver rookie and plan on buying one early next year. For 1981 I need Stargell & Niekro. For 1982 I need Carl Yaz.

Recently, I began collecting 18 key cards in each of the 1970's football sets and so far have 69/180. The only set I have finished is 1978. Next year, I plan on finishing 1975-1979. So far I have the following:

1970/3 of 18 - I have Bart Starr (PSA 7), Bob Lilly (PSA 8) & Gale Sayers (PSA 7)
1971/0 of 18
1972/4 of 18 - I have Namath, Bradshaw, Sayers and Riggins all in PSA 7
1973/3 of 18 - I have Bradshaw (PSA 7), Tarkenton and Green in PSA 8.
1974/5 of 18 - I have Staubach & Griese in PSA 7. Riggins, Franco Harris, Merlin Olsen in PSA 8.
1975/12 of 18 - I need Swann, Fouts, Thiesmann, Pearson, Olsen & Franco Harris. I may try to do all in 8 or 8.5's.
1976/5 of 18 - I have Staubach, Tarkenton, Fouts & Harris in PSA 8 and Mean Joe Green in PSA 8.5.
1977/11 of 18 - Fouts and Payton are PSA 7. The rest are PSA 8, 8.5 or 9.
1978/18 of 18 - The Dorsett is a PSA 7, Csonka a PSA 9 and Payton PSA 7.5. The rest are PSA 8 or 8.5.
1979/8 of 18 - All in PSA 8 or 9.

Hopefully, I can get to well over 50% of the way there by the end of the year. I have only been collecting football since late August, so I am off to a pretty good start.

What are your goals for 2009?

I'm going to buy a few 1933 Goudey star cards, and a few vintage star cards from the 1950's and 60's.
The main two cards I want to buy in 2009 are the two Ted Williams cards in the 1954 topps set, probably nice examples in PSA 6 or 7.

Build a time machine back to the 80's and 90's image

I've been out of collecting for awhile, been doing other things. I think with the economy, card prices won't be exploding anytime soon. I'll probably wait on all collectibles (including 80's GI Joes). There's nothing that's a must have right now.

Would still like to get some 80's wax boxes (mostly OPC hockey). Like an 80/81 box somewhere down the line. That'd be one of my top wax box goals.

And the time machine...that'd be a nice goal.

Also pre war eventually, Goudeys. We'll take one thing at a time.

I want very much to finish 1971-79 Topps sets with PSA 7 keys before the end of this decade (I'm only a 12 PSA 7's short of finishing 1974, two for 1975, and about 6-7 each year for 1976-79). I'm getting close to getting the 90s sets wrapped up so hopefully I can focus more exclusively on 1970s stuff.

I have been slowly grabbing 1933 Goudey commons when the market has been light. My guess is I would like to buy more of those.

Assuming I am still employed I plan on jumping in on Topps Heritage for the first time, and of course A&G.

I had set some goals for this year, but unfortunately I was not able to purchase of them due to bad circumstances in my profession.

I wanted to add these cards to my collection:

1971 Topps Steve Garvey PSA 8
1992 Bowman Mike Piazza PSA 10
1992 Fleer Update Mike Piazza PSA 10
1968 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 6
1968 Topps Don Drysdale Probably a PSA 8 to 8.5

I added many 78 to 83 rack packs and cellos this year, but ended up selling most of them off.

    2009 Goals:
Probably just to buy a few rack packs and some low dollar purchases here and there. I probably won't spend more than a couple hundred dollars in 2009. My main goal is to just to take the next year or two off until I get back on top of my finances.

I've narrowed my main spending to ONE of these three ideas:

1.) Buy key cards I need for my Bowmans ( Mays and Williams or just the Mantle)
2.) Buy a couple Ruths' and a Gehrig for my Goudeys
3.) Buy the remaining commons for my Bowmans and a nice-sized lot of commons for the Goudeys

    My extra/impulse spending will be:

    09 Heritage
    Some 70's wax and racks
    impulse buys from the B/S/T

I really, and by really, I mean REALLY, would like to knock off a couple of my player sets. I'm down to 5 cards for my Mike Schmidt basic set (can the cost of the 80s leafs come down a bit??) and hopefully be in the top 5. I'm going to finish my Brett basic (TOP 3) set too. I'd also like to finish my 1972 Kellogg master (top 5) and basic (top 10) sets. After that, I'm probably going to concentrate on my Bob Gibson basic set, Tom Seaver basic set and then start another player set - maybe Ernie Banks for Roberto Clemente.
If there is one "big" single card purchase I'd like to make it's got to be a tobacco Ty Cobb. Been looking at a few and just haven't pulled the trigger.

I thought it would be fun to update where we are at. I still have not got the Seaver to finish my 1967 set yet. I have been focusing my budget more on football.

Here is where I stand with building 30 superstars from each Topps Set from 1956-1985:

    1956 12/30
    1957 1/30
    1958 14/30
    1959 30/30
    1960 6/30
    1961 30/30
1962 28/30 - Need Gibson and Brock in PSA 6
    1963-1964 30/30
1965 24/30 - Need Mantle, Clemente, Mays, Killebrew, Hunter & Rose in PSA 6
    1966 30/30
    1967 29/30 - Need Seaver
    1968-1981 30/30
1982 29/30 - Just need Yaz. Have not been actively looking.
    1983-1985 30/30

Football - I am well past 50% of 18 key cards from each year in the 70's. I have 156/180 cards from the 70's. So I have well exceeded my goals. I have even started buying into the 60's.

    1967 - 6/18
    1968 - 11/18
    1969 - 15/18 - Just need Olsen, Jurgenson and Griese in PSA 6, 7 or 8.
    1970 - 8/18 - My least favorite set of the 70's.
    1971 - 8/18 - Pretty tought set.
1972 - 14/18 - Need Hendricks, Deacon Jones, Lilly and Csonka.
    1973-1976 18/18
    1977 - 17/18 - Need Largent in PSA 8
    1978-1979 18/18

I have also been buying some 70's PSA Graded Basketball and Hockey superstars. Not sure if I have a specific goal in mind for those.

    Where is everyone else at?

I made a late goal recently to get to 50% complete on my '62 Topps Registry Basic Set. I've got a potential trade in the works to help me get close. I'll have to pick up a few more cards before the end of the year, but that'll be a fun job!

2.) complete my 59' topps, 65 phili raw football sets. start a few more raw vintage football sets 56,61 topps
3.) start a mid grade baseball hof collection in sgc >>

1.) I'm sitting at 56.28% on the nfl hof rc set
2.) not sure if I'll finish the '59 topps and '65 phili sets sitting at about 80%+ on both
3.) haven't started the mid grade hof baseball collection yet but maybe before years out I'll pick up a few

All and all not bad, I haven't bought a single card in months though so I'll get back into it soon...

<< <i>1. Complete my 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Set in PSA 9+ average. ( I am down to needing 11 cards to finish this set started in June 2008). >>

<< <i>2. Reach 50%+ on my Post War HOFer's Registry while maintaining a PSA 8+ rating. I would specifically like to complete this set from 1959 to the present HOFer's >>

<< <i>3. Reach 30% on both my Paul O'Neill Master and Basic Registry Sets while maintaining a 9.5+ GPA. >>

<< <i>4. Start a Mickey Mantle Basic Registry. Aside from the 1967 PSA 8 I already have, My first purchase will be a 1960 in PSA 7+ condition. I would like to add 5 PSA 7+ Mantles to this registry by the end of 2009. >>

    1. Completed the 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Set with a 9.01 GPA. Recently decided to sell the set to fund the purchase of a Musial PSA 8 RC and Koufax PSA 7 RC for my Post War HOFers set and my Musial Basic Set.

    2. Currently at 63% complete with a 8.13 GPA.

    3. Currently at 38% on the Basic and 44% on the Master Paul O'Neill sets. Have added approximately 50 cards to the Master composition, and currently right at the 9.5 GPA goal I set for myself.

    4. I made a major departure from my collecting goals when I decided against doing the Mantle Basic set after evaluating the financial obligations associated with the Mantle cards in the condition I would like. So I decided to build the Musial and Clemente Basic Sets in its place. I enjoy the history associated with these players much more than that of Mantle, and can certainly do these sets much more economically than that of the Mantle set. My goals are to complete both sets with a GPA of 7.5. I am currently at 70% on the Musial set and 50% on the Clemente set and am slightly ahead of the GPA goals I set for myself.

Up to #23 in the Set Registry at 70% complete. I've had TOO much fun shopping for cards... image Doubt if I'll get past Mr. bobsbbcards though! That's quite an accomplishment with nothing lower than a 7!

<< <i>Finished 2000 Donruss Graded Series base set, make progress on other sets. Finish at least one insert set in the series.

Get my Steve Young and Marcus Allen basic player registry sets over 50%

Add more Steve Young cards, 3 cards+ a week average, to my raw set

Finish the 1974 Kellogg's set in PSA 9/10

Looks like I met all my 2009 goals but finishing one of the Kellogg's sets and the 2002 Score QBC set. I did add a few to all. Overall pretty good..didn't buy anything for 3-4 months.

Edit because what I first wrote makes no sense.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

Double check on that. I am grateful to have a job and income, too.

Congrats on meeting a couple of your goals!

Here's my goals for 2009, with how I did on each one:

Reach 75% on my Baseball HOF Player set, 70% on my Baseball HOF Manager set, 65% on my Football HOF Player/Coach/Admin set, 50% on my Baseball HOF Complete set, 45% on my Basketball HOF Player set, and 30% on my Hockey HOF Player set.
Didn't reach any of those, although I came quite close in football.

Reach 85% on at least one registry set, and 50% on at least 3 others.
    No. I reached 50% on 1 set.

Take at least 2 more of my pre-1950 registry sets over 10% and another 3 over 5%.
    No. I took 3 over 5%.

Take at least 1 more of my '50s registry sets over 20%, 2 more over 10%, and another 3 more over 5%.
    I came close. I took 1 over 20% and 5 others over 10%.

Take at least 2 more of my '60s registry sets over 20%, 3 more over 10%, and another 4 more over 5%.
    I came close. I took 6 over 20%, 2 over 10%, and 4 over 5%

Take at least 4 more of my '70s registry sets over 20%, 5 more over 10%, and another 6 more over 5%.
    Yes. I took 4 over 20%, 6 over 10%, and 11 over 5%.

Take at least 4 more of my '80s registry sets over 20%, 5 more over 10%, and another 5 more over 5%.
    I took 2 over 20%, 2 over 10%, and 8 over 5%.

Take at least 1 of my player registry sets over 50%, 3 more of my player registry sets over 33 1/3%, and 6 more of my player registry sets over 10%.
    I took 1 over 50%, 2 over 33 1/3%, and 11 over 10%.

Acquire at least 5 different autographed sports books.
No. Just 2 (Andre Agassi and Warren Moon).

Acquire at least 20 type cards from vintage sets I don't have any of (any sport) - including adding a '59 Topps Venezuelan, a caramel type card, and a tobacco type card.
I got 21 type cards from sports sets, and a few nonsports, but I didn't pick up the Venezuelan or caramel or tobacco sports type cards.

Acquire playing-days cards of at least 5 HOFers who I don't already have cards of (any sport).
No. I picked up 3 that qualify for this - Dave Bancroft, John McGraw (managerial career), and Bowie Kuhn (during his time as Commissioner.

Pull a GU card of a HOFer (any sport) from a pack.
Pull an auto card of a HOFer (any sport) from a pack.

No. I didn't exactly try hard here - I opened less than 10 packs all year.

Acquire at least 5 GU or auto cards of HOFers who I don't already have GU or auto cards of.
Yes - quite nicely. Baseball - Killebrew and Mathews jerseys; Basketball - Baylor, Hayes, Lovellette, McGuire, Riley, Schayes, and Wanzer autos (plus a Robertson card with a swatch that says personally worn, but may not be from anything to do with a NBA game); Hockey - LaFontaine and Ullman autos.

Acquire at least 5 vintage autographs of HOFers.
No. I picked up 1 that might count - a Scoreboard certified signed '70 Bench (numbered, with a COA from Scoreboard from 1993).

Acquire at least 1 HOFer apiece from T-206, '33 Goudey, and '52 Topps.
I got a T206 McGraw and '33 Goudey Hoyt, but no '52 Topps.

Reach 45% on my '54 Topps and '54 Bowman Basic (BB) registry sets.
No. I added a few to both, but not many.

Reach 40% on my '36 Goudey and '56 Gum Adventure registry sets.
No. I'm still well short on both.

Reach 33 1/3% on my '40 Play Ball, '59 Fleer Ted Williams, and '61-'62 Fleer Baseball registry sets.
No. The only one where I came anywhere close was '61-'62 Fleer Baseball.

Reach 25% on my R423 registry set.
No. I came close, though (3 cards shy)

Reach 10% on my Bowman NBC TV & Radio Stars and '56 Topps Jets registry sets.
I made it for Bowman TV & Radio, but didn't add a single Jets all year.

Add 5% on at least 4 of my Upper Deck MVP gold parallel sets.
No. I came close to 5% added on 3 sets, but didn't reach the mark on any.

Add at least 75 Jerry Porter serial numbered rookies or rookie parallels.
    Yes. 86.

Add at least 20 Jerry Porter autographed cards and 15 Jerry Porter game-used cards.
Yes. 47 autographed, 12 true game-used, and 20 event-used (mainly Rookie Premiere Photo Shoot jerseys, but I still count them as game-used.

Add 1 item of game-used equipment from a HOFer (any sport).
No. I bought two pieces of game-used equipment, but none from anybody with a chance at a HOF.

Add 10% to the completion percentage on at least 5 of my vintage sets and 5% to the completion percentage on at least 20 more of my vintage sets (any sport).
Yes. By my best count, I added 10% of the set for 25 vintage sets and 5% of the set for 17 other sets. These ranged from small sets like '70 Rold Gold baseball and '70 Jack in the Box Pirates to large sets like several '70s OPC baseball sets and '62 Topps baseball.

I'm pretty happy with how I did. My 2010 goals will look similar to 2009.
