opinions needed on this 94 sp arod

I'm in the market for a couple of 1994 Upper Deck Arod SP RC's. Could you comment on this card in a ebay auction, specifically the top border . There appears to be alot of white showing which in my opinion would prevent this card from recieving a grade of 9 . I am buying the card and not the grade . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

94 sp rc arod

thanks Joe

What white are you referring to? Card looks pretty good to me. I think it may just be the way Beckett cards scan because if the recessed holder.
  • it appears to be almost all the way across the top of the card

Friends don't let friends buy high grade BGS RC's. Remember that it wasn't even three years ago that BGS actually emailed a member of these boards and told them, in completely unambiguous language, that they would grade any card that measured 2 1/2" by 3 1/2". It is only recently that they've began to try to discern when a card that sizes up has been trimmed.

forget the card, just buy his underwear
  • I agree with Mike. I don't see any white. I see a glare from the scanner. Card looks really clean to me. If it was whitening on the edges, I assure you the card would not have received a 9 on edges and surface.
  • Thanks to those who responded to this thread.

  • Joe,

I also believe the scan/scanner is making it appear to have a bad top edge and bottom edge.

I also agree with Boo that I would go after that card in a different holder unless I could see it in person with my own loupe.

    Thanks,

What is visible is the reflective qualities of the foil edge. This is common when scanning foil cards, especially when they have "textured" foil at the edges (whether trimmed or not) and it is even more evident when the card is any distance from the scanning bed as is the case when it is in a TPG holder. There should be little concern over whether the card is in MINT condition, but I would question which, if any, of the edges are original.
  • It's interesting how much easier it is to get high grade BGS 1994 SP A-Rod and 1993 SP Jeter rookies than it is to get high-grade PSA examples. Check out the pop reports

    For the 1994 SP A-Rod:

    PSA 9's - 1,236 of 13,363 graded (9.25%) BGS 9's - 1,284 of 10,769 graded (11.9%)
    PSA 9 die-cuts - 44 of 1,355 graded (3.25%) BGS 9 die-cuts - 64 of 1,141 graded (5.6%)
    PSA 10's - 38 of 13,363 graded (0.28%) BGS 9.5's - 93 of 10,769 graded (0.86%)
    PSA 10 die cuts - ZERO GRADED PSA 10 BGS 9.5's - 11 of 1,141 graded (0.96%)

    For the 1993 SP Jeter:

    PSA 9's - 428 of 9,198 graded (4.65%) BGS 9's - 541 of 7,809 graded (6.93%)
    PSA 10's - 9 of 9,198 graded (0.098%) BGS 9.5's - 46 of 7,809 graded (0.59%)

Shows why the PSA 10's of Jeter and A-Rod go for so much more than the BGS 9.5's. That first A-Rod die-cut PSA 10 will bring a nice chunk of change!
