Steve Hart, a Slurpee, & some Ding Dongs - returning a 40-year old to his "ute"

(edited for correct spelling of "ute")

My younger brother turned 40 recently. In an attempt to return him to his boyhood, here's what he received from me:

(1) From Baseball Card Exchange, all 1978 Topps (the year he was 10):

image

(2) Stopped by the 7/11 on the way to his house and filled this baby with his favorite childhood Slurpee (Montain Dew). George was his favorite player growing up:

image

(3) An unopened box of 1975 Hostess King Dons, with expiration date of January, 2009. This represents my first ever attempts at re-sealing. Gary has nothing on me. Even wrapped them suckers in foil image:

In the Cousin Vinny movie-script, the correct spelling of the word is "UTE."

    No "y."

I'm a little disoriented. Weren't they called 'Ding Dongs' when we were kids, only to have their name changed to 'King Dons' sometime during the Reagan years?
  • You sir are a class act!

    Gentlemen (and Matt),

I really appreciate the kind words. He opened the packs right away. The basketball pack was the best, with a Maravich, a Bill Walton, and a Bernard King rookie. The hockey pack had a few decent cards. No major stars in the football or baseball packs ("crap packs" as my dad would call them), but all of the cards were in sweet condition (except for the gum). That was my initial order from Steve Hart, and everything was first class.

Boo, I'm with you, if you told me in 1975 they were called "King Dons" and today they are called "Ding Dongs", I would have bet a large sum of money that you had your facts reversed.

One final thing I included but did not scan was a Sports Illustrated from November 26, 1978. The cover story was Ohio State beating Michigan with Art Schlichter as the QB. That was a great piece for my brother and I, as we are both Michigan State graduates, and barring any actual athletic accomplishments by our own team, we take great delight in the demise of the Skunkbears.

    -Tom

Looks like a perfect gift for your 40 year old brother. You put lots of thought into it and put some very good effort into the gift. I turned 40 a few months ago and I barely got a happy birthday from my very rich older brother.image

Heh, I glanced at the nutritional information on that box of King Dons... Something's not quit right...

    1 King Don (1975)
    190 calories
    11 g fat
    22 g carbs

    1 Ding Dong (2008)
    368 calories
    19.4 g fat
    45 g carbs

So, did these things get more unhealthy? The 1975 King Dons almost qualify as diet food by today's standards!

Until 1994, nutritional info on labels did not have to be "honest."

Digicat - my wife and I were comparing the nutritional information the day I was "resealing" them. The numbers on the new box were very very close to the numbers on the box from 1975 (much closer than the ones you show above), but the older ones were marginally "healthier".

Ah, looking at the weights of the "cakes", I think the info I was drawing from may have been going by a 2.8 oz serving, as opposed to a 1.33 oz serving.

I seem to remember these things being a little bigger than just 1.33 oz though.

Hey, you should replace the word "Dons" with "Dongs" and see if he notices. image
