When did you last “cherrypick” your collection and what did you find?

Many collectors have favored parts of their collections – where active purchases and upgrades are an important part of the hobby. But most also have an accumulation of miscellaneous “stuff.” Some from trades, some from buying small collections to get the one or two “good” coins, some from series that are of limited current interest.

When did you last “cherrypick” your own collection and what did you find? was there something you’d forgotten about or possibly a variety you didn’t know you had?

In my case, I found a 1921 Peace dollar VAM-3, a 1927-D VAM-2; a 1916-D dime in AG; a silver denarius of C. Scribonius 154BC; and a gold solidus of Justinian I S-140 H.

I bought three 1939-D Jefferson Nickels in MS67 from another forum member. Months later, I realized two were DDO #1s.

It's been a few months, but by taking advantage of the "Direct Ship Rolls" from the U.S. Mint, I was able to find an edge lettering error on a John Quincy Adams presidential dollar. (2008 P)
The word "WE" is squished together. The letter "T" in Trust is also absent, while "GOD" appears, in hand, to be tripled.

    I searched ten rolls (250).

It been a while, but a while ago I bought a very large lot of off center cents to resell. In going thru the lot I found an off center 2000 type 2 reverse with the Wide AM. Then I found another, and another and even and off center type 2 with a large indent, first one that I have seen anywhere, very cool. I only wish the seller had more to sell, which he didn't as i bought him out.

About a month ago after finding out what a 1946S S/S/S/S FS502 DDR Roosevelt Dime really looked like. I checked my PCGS MS67FB coin and it was the same. When it is sent in it will be a POP 1 for the variety.

I sold the coin to a forum member that needed it for his set after I found a 46S to replace it in my set.

This whole cherrypicking yourself doesn't sound very ethical.

It's funny you should ask now.

I went through some 15th to 18th century junk foreign last night
and briefly thought I had found some Massachusettes silver. It was
heavily worn and is something else.

Nothing. I was never into the VAM thing, but a couple of weeks ago I checked about 80+ Morgan and Peace dollars I've had for decades against a VAM website posted here. I didn't find anything, and now I need stronger eyeglasses. image

Last two finds were a GSA 1880cc Vam6 and 1960 Franklin proof DDO.

I was the discoverer of the 1880 VAM-1E, characterized by a big chip on Liberty's chin. It is an MS65DMPL. Before I sent it in to Leroy Van Allen for a new find, I had it labeled as VAM-25. In fact, I had sent it in to revise the VAM-25 description. Forgot all about it. Then the Hit List 40 was being mulled around and the VAM-25 appeared to be among the stable half that were shoe-ins for the set. I went back over my coin of that date, blind to my attributions, and found that VAM-1E also fit the VAM-25 criteria. It was a weird roundabout cherrpick. Otherwise, I don;t cherrypick myown collection often as I cherrypick for my collection in the first place.

Sounds like quite a few nice coins were "found" just by checking your own collections. I wonder how much remains hidden?

Thought I would answer the OP's question rather then start a new thread. I guess it's okay to resurrect an old thread, what the heck.

To answer your question: A few days ago, a 63DDO.

Something that always concerned me with this coin collecting hobby.....................having something significant in my collection and not know it. I'm always going through and back through my collection thinking I may have missed something. I think I missed this one!!

I know... The lighting and focus sucks but I think it's all there.

    I don't think it's really worth submitting, unless maybe it's a 66 or 67.

Disclaimer: I'm not a dealer, trader, grader, investor or professional numismatist. I'm just a hobbyist. (To protect me but mostly you! 🤣 )
