NYC

I'm going to NYC next week with the wife to experience(freezemyass image ) the holiday season there. So this should be fun.
Suggestions on something fun to do while I am there ?? - I expect answers from your actual experiences and of course some mixed humor
which requires either your wit or half wit whichever is the case.

    Edited to add:

At times square you should visit madame tousotts <sp> dunkin donuts is having a promotion with them and have coupons

I recall in the 1960s, as a student, that there were signs at the start of the line in all of the good delis:

"Have Your Money In Your Hand and Your Order In Your Head."

If you got to the front of the line and didn't spit it out fast enough, the carver would yell, "NEXT!!!!,"
and motion you out of the line.

It's best not to try to drive in the city. The trains and the cabs get the job done.

  • Wow, and I know a bunch of guys live there, but just the sound of the place gives me goosebumps.

When you grow up in a small pop2184 fishing community near the Arctic Circle, NYC seems like something that can only be seen in movies.

I'll go there someday soon, and I think I'll plan to spend months there. NYC

When I went to NYC, it was in February.

It was 19 degrees with a 30 mph wind. Wind chill of -5 to -10.

    I'm from Louisiana.

That said, I actually do have some tips.

A friend suggested that we eat at La Mela in Little Italy. He was right!

Also, skip the Empire State Building and go to Rockefeller Center. The view from the "Top of the Rock" is pretty much the same, but the wait is waaaay less.

And as another poster said, subway/cab is the way to go.

Not a horrible suggestion, but as an Italian living in NYC all my life, I would recommend Pellegrino's, Joey Paesano's, or even Bouna Notte before La Mela (all within 50 yards of each other), but do not get dessert in any of those places since you are within walking distance of Ferrara's.

You didn't say where you are from, but I'll give you some insight from a laid back Californian visiting the Big Apple.

    - Be prepared for a totally different "pace" to life there. Everyone is in a hurry.

    - Don't expect people to be overtly friendly. This is a city where everyone seems to be competing with everyone else about everything. Even when asking directions I had a guy pause to think about what was in it for him, but he did give me the directions. Personally I think everyone puts on a facade, as once you get to know most NYers they are some of the nicest and and most generous people around.

    - Know where you are going and walk briskly and confidently at all times.

    - Don't, repeat, don't find yourself on the sidewalks at lunch time...when I first got there i wondered why the sidewalks were so wide, then when lunch hits it's unbelievably crowded. I used to think those movie shots of crowded NY sidewalks were due to camera compression, but no, it's true.

    - If you like museums visit as many as you can. It's like when you visit Washington DC, you see paintings on the wall like Van Gogh's "Starry Night", stuff you see in books all the time, and it hits you that you are looking at the original painting. Ones you should not miss are the Museum of Modern Art, the Natural History Museum, the Guggenheim and the Museum of Art (where the Jeff Burdick card collection resides).

    - Cross the streets with crowds, cab drivers use solo walkers for target practice. Also, when in a cab, don't get worried that the cabbies don't pay any attention to the lines on the street, nor that they never have both hands on the wheel. The other one has to be used for honking the horn (constantly).

    - If you are with wife/gf/sigother be careful with wandering eyes. If you are staying in Manhattan and walking around a lot you will see some of the most beautiful women you have ever laid your eyes on...and they're EVERYWHERE.

    Enjoy your trip!

  • We visited NYC around Christmas 3 years ago and had a great time. There is simply no other city that has the same "feel" as NY. If I could I would love to relocate there.
  • jimradjimrad Posts: 2,777 ✭✭✭
    Thanks for the ideas.

I should have mentioned that this is not my first trip to NYC. My wife and I just wanted to get the winter/Christmas experience. We are hitting Broadway and the MOMA and maybe Nick's suggestion on Ferrara's. That would be for me as the wife has food allergies(gluten) which means no Italian unless they have wheat free pasta. I have been on the Top of the Rock which is awesome. might do it again, but the weather is looking frightful and the best place there is the open observation deck on the very top....burrrrrr.
Keep the ideas coming I appreciate it.

And I am from Southern California, so I am leaving 75-80 degree weather for this .............

WOW! It's really great to read posts from people from other parts of the country who have visited NYC or who want to visit one day. Although I have been on Long Island my entire life (I have lived anywhere from 15 - 50 miles outside NYC) and worked in NYC for 6 years back in the 80's, I guess I take all the beautiful woman, great places to eat, historic landmarks, etc... for granted. HOWEVER, one Landmark that I will NEVER again take for granted, and that is the WORLD TRADE CENTER. I knew a couple of individuals who died that day ... I think every NEW YAWKA can tell you where they were when that tradgedy occured.

Went there about 5 years ago and took a group tour. Went to the Empire State Bldg., saw Times Square, Wall Street and went to the Statue of Liberty, though we were not allowed to go inside. Saw alot of different things, but next I we would like to go on our own.

Just bypass NYC and come and visit zep and me on Cape Cod.

Went to NYC for the 1st time in my life in March. Pretty cool experience.

My wife had a seminar on Friday so I spent the day walking around getting my bearings.

95% of the people had black or dark gray on. Not a lot of color in clothing.

Mega expensive, this coming from someone who grew up in Boston. Lunch for 2 in Fridays just north of Times square was $75 and we don't drink.

Just walking the streets is so much fun.

We walked from our hotel on W48th street to the WTC site it was a very cool walk.
