Advice Requested on a "scratched" slab

Hi,

I very recently purchased a 1969 Clemente PSA 9 from Memory Lane. The card was very well packaged and as advertised, but there seems to be a slight scratch (not really a crack) in the slab. Even in the scan I just did and am posting here, the scratch is not noticeable. What would you suggest doing? I am happy with the card but that scratch is a little annoying.

Here was the original auction (his scan is better than mine)

Thanks for your opinion.

I use car wax on my slabs. It works great for removing minor scuffs and scratches.

In fact I just did one a few minutes ago.

I, obviously, cannot see the scratch.

If it is bothersome, send the card to PSA and they will reholder it for tiny money.

If the scratch is light, that screaming guy on TV sells a liquid product that should
mostly get rid of the scratch.

Car wax is really the way to go.

You can even leave your cards out in the rain and the water will bead up nicely.

I guess that'd explain why some put graded cards in "condoms" image

I'm not sure how serious you are, but we have to use plexiglass or lexan at times in my profession. I've used different compound rubbing compounds and polishing compounds with great success, but it's very tedious and can get expensive.

The scratch you are referring to (Which I cant see) is the reason we slab these cards in the first place. The slab protects cards such as this one from "Ordinary Handling" by yourself and other friends who like cards and have to touch it and see it up close. Just accept it and look at it as a realistic part of displaying your collection safely.
  • Zymol,
I used that on my cars. It does have a nice smell to it and does a nice job on cars.

Similar to Matt's suggestion, I use a plastic cleaner/polish made by Meguiar's (known for car wax). I've used this stuff to restore some pretty nasty looking slabs I've gotten from eBay sellers.

I have some scratch removal stuff called Novus, does pretty good on slabs. I bought it for removing scratches from Cd's.

If that doesnt work get some of those flippin Sham-Wow's and rub real hard.

I just scratch up my eyeglasses so I can't notice any scratched slabs.
  • DeutscherGeistDeutscherGeist Posts: 2,990 ✭✭✭✭
Years ago on this board, we all had a consensus to use NOVUS as a scratch remover. I think it fills in cracks made by scratches. There were three types and readily found on ebay.

Car wax or plastic cleaners should do the trick as well. The results will let you know.

Why you guys mention Shamwow is beyond me. It is an absorbant towel. It cannot remove scratches in any appreciable way. That thing is made for drying surfaces by absorbing large volumes of water (kind of like a chamois). If the shamwow can remove scratches, that means it is polishing. This would be disasterous on car paints that only need to be dried. So, I cannot safely use the shamwow on my car?

The shamwow comment was a joke to go along with the Billy Mays jokes. Besides, the shamwow wouldn't be able to absorb the moisture off a can of beer on a hot summer's day. I don't think you're gonna be drying your car with it unless your car is 1/64th scale die cast
