A question for Seasoned [Coxe - MessyDesk] VAMers....

.... Why is it that so many Morgans have a broken 4th star and always the same point (i.e. leftmost horizontal starpoint on the 4th right obverse star). I expect there must be a technical reason having to do with coin design and die strike/wear/pressure. Having just gotten into VAMs I've found the broken 4th star to be a very common trait of many VAM Morgans.

Thanks! image

Edited for clarification: For perspective, the orientation of the star with respect to the rim; If the downward point of the star is at the very bottom nearest the rim, then the leftmost horizontal star * is the broken one. And not just on any single date or mint but on many in the series although maybe more prevalent on some dates.

Perhaps it was a design flaw in the master die. I'm looking forward to Coxe and MessyDesk to reply to this one.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • It is very common on the 1878 imho
