CU Sports Talk Forum .... NOT very good PLUS some weather talk

softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,281 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm ready to take alot of flak for this thread. Bring it on!

This Sports Talk forum is horrible. It really is. I have posted here for a looong time and the past year have been to other national type forums that blow this forum away. One of them is mainly a WEATHER site (anotherhobby of mine) that has a Sports Talk forum. Imagine THAT. The banter there is 100 times more productive with a huge amount of quality posters. Red Sox fans, Cowboy fans, Cavalier fans ..... you name it. Sports takes a back seat to the main direction of the board. Yet, THIS forum which cultivates its participants from SPORTS TRADNG CARD enthusiasts lacks alot.

This forum BLOWS. There is a very small core group here that is great. That is it ....

If you like NFL this forum would be OK. As it is I'd rather listen to the folks here talk cards. image

If this forum weren't home to the six pre-'07 Phillies fans and the one pre-'08 Rays fan, it would be just plain sad. But we do have that going for us, which is nice.

I think there are plenty here who could contribute mightily to a rabid sports discussion but as the nature of the whole site is cards, I think most are focused on that area. It's not the posters, it's the forum.

    Edited for spelling

  • << <i>but as the nature of the whole site is cards >>

    CARDS? Typical sports collector delusion.

Coins are at the top of the home page, sports "stuff" comes in at #2 (appropriate number, eh what? image ).

Old timers likely would argue that CU has done more to drive participants away than to cultivate engaging forums. It's not the only reason, but it certainly doesn't help.

Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Phillies, (1) Rays fan
Very few Pats, Cowboys, Eagles fans and (1) Tampa fan that post regularly

I think its the nature of the beast, these forums don't allow alot of the raunchy sports talk you get at most fan forums. In fact, that is a good way to get booted.

Card collecting in general to me was biggest in the northeast growing up so it is no surprise that alot of the collectors here are NY, Boston and Philly fans.

I started and kept a Pirates thread this year but ended up curling up in fetal position and crying after they made their trades.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set

Part of the problem is this sports forum does not get much traffic.

I think the censors are a small part of it. We are all somewhat cautious of what we type here.

I would be curious of some good sports boards though. While I enjoy going to boards that only talk about my teams I prefer ones like CU that have a wide variety of sports fans... just want more fans.

  • "Old timers likely would argue that CU has done more to drive participants away than to cultivate engaging forums"

Keep in mind that the sport froum was just set up to clean up the sportcard and mem forum, NOT the other way around. Carol got sick of having to clean
up OT posts. This forum is where all the junk goes...and junk it is.

There isn't a place on the face of the earth that has more information on topps heritage and Allen and Ginter than the Sportcard boards. I think that is pretty
impressive, the cleaning up of those boards and hence the addition of these boards have made that possible, so in a sense, we are important!

  • I did find an all psa member fantasy football league here 3 years ago, won it never received the promised prize and never heard again from the league leader.

As for sports talk I would think that any of the real sport sites would be better espn/cbs sports etc.

I wouldnt think anybody would go to say cbs sports to post about graded collectible cards.

I actually appreciate this sports talk forum more than most of the other ones I've read.

One reason I like this forum is that you don't have people whose entire posted message is "first." That drives me crazy. So, you're the first one to respond to an article or a comment? Big deal.

Another reason I like this forum is because it's relatively small. I enjoy getting to know individual personalities. I would think that being a part of a much larger, more active forum might make that more difficult.

I also like that most of us have the common bond of collecting sports cards or memorabilia. That just says to me that a lot of us are coming from a common starting point even if we have different perspectives on a subject.

I will say though that I've spent a lot less time on this forum since baseball season ended.

I have noticed some regulars prefer to start their "sports talk" threads on the Cards and Memorabilia Forum instead of here. There was an identical thread started on both forums within an hour of each other earlier this week titled "Baseball Curses"--which was a surely a "sports talk" discussion, yet the thread on "sport talk" forum got 0 responses (the last I saw of it), and the identical one on "cards and memorabilia" forum at least had a couple of responses.

Seems like if there was a moderator that would simply transplant discussions to the proper forums, the traffic might follow and maybe there would be more activity on this sports talk forum. It also seems like some members really do not even realize there is a "sports talk" forum, as these same members start sport talk threads repeatedly in the "cards and memorabilia" forum.

Too bad we don't have any moderators in the sports forums--I recall there was once one named "Sportscard Moderator" (or something to the effect), but that person seemed to live/breathe in the coin forums exclusively and rarely visited here.

I'd enjoy it more myself if this sports card forum were more lively. I expect the "cards and memorbilia" forum to get more action, because that is the business that PSA and almost all of us actively participate in--but most all of us are also sports fans, so more action here would be fun.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

  • Let's not beat around the bush here.

The OP is trying to divert attention away from the impending loss of the Super Bowl Champion "Gints" to the Eagles this weekend.

"Look, look shiny object! This board sucks!"

"What the Giants lost? How did we miss that?"

Dan, would you be more interested if one of us shot himself in the leg? image

  • Don't tell anyone Dan, but I also frequent a weather board.

My excuse though is that it's my business.

I need to hear what a lot of meteorologists are saying in the background rather than on air. Some of that info I get directly from them on the phone in conference calls but they're not all willing to take a chance while many are listening.

I, for one, primarily post during baseball season, that's where my interest is as I follow the Red Sox very closely. Having grown up in New England, that's my "excuse". I have no desire or interest in basketball (although I loved watching Larry Byrd, the Chief, etc, etc), no desire in hockey and a passing interest in football.

Perhaps as others have mentioned, it's that this board is composed mostly of card collectors and not necessarily those that are stat geeks or have more specific insights into each player or team activity. If you go to Net54, you will find a wealth of info on the real vintage stuff, T206s etc, etc. However, I don't see a lot of "sports discussion" there, just tons of card collecting info.

It is interesting that you find a weather board that is "100 times better" than this one to discuss sports.

Couple of questions...I'd like to know how weather can be a hobby. Is it the change of seasons, chasing tornados, following hurricanes, blizzards? Do you follow different METAR reports? BTW, if you'd like to see some VERY interesting METAR reports, check out Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

What is it in your opinion that the other boards offer in terms of sports chat that this one is so lacking in? As mentioned by others, I think during baseball season, most of the solid posters are following the teams in the northeast, Yankees, Mets, Phllies, Red Sox. The Rays probably fall into this group as well, but not much posting about the bulk of teams west of the Mississippi, Diamonbacks, Oakland, Seattle. Must be that "official" tag in posts.

Of course with the Plaxico stuff, that makes nationwide news that will always be posted about and of course when a major figure gets fired, like Tuberville at Auburn. I think your'e gonna be hard pressed to find a lot of in-depth chat on each team or sport here. Once OJ gets sentenced or Clemens comes back into the lime light they will get more posts as well.

I guess the "most exciting topic" on the weather forum about baseball during baseball season must be heated, lively, detailed, long discussions on whether or not a particular game will be rained out or not? image

  • Somebody in or around the intersection of the blue (below normal temps) and the green (heavy precip) may get some decent snow / ice.

Not to worry though, come early 09 I understand that moderate temps will settle in across the NE US.

FOR MONDAY DECEMBER 08 - WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 10: BY THE BEGINNING OF THE FORECAST PERIOD, THE LAKE EFFECT SNOW EVENT WILL BE WINDING DOWN AS SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE STRENGTHENS AND SHIFTS EASTWARD. A CYCLONE ACROSS SOUTHEAST CANADA WILL RAPIDLY INTENSIFY AND THIS IN COMBINATION WITH THE STRENGTHENING HIGH PRESSURE ACROSS THE EAST WILL RESULT IN A STRONG PRESSURE GRADIENT ACROSS NEW ENGLAND AND THEREFORE VERY STRONG WINDS EARLY DURING THE PERIOD. A VERY ENERGETIC STORM SYSTEM WILL IMPACT THE ALASKAN PANHANDLE EARLY NEXT WEEK WITH HEAVY PRECIPITATION AND VERY STRONG WINDS STRETCHING FROM SOUTHEAST ALASKA TO PORTIONS OF NORTHWEST WASHINGTON. BY THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK, A TROUGH WILL DEVELOP ACROSS THE WEST-CENTRAL US AND BEGIN TO SHIFT EASTWARDS WITH TWO EMBEDDED ROBUST SHORTWAVES - ONE IN THE NORTHERN STREAM AND ANOTHER IN THE SOUTHERN STREAM. THE GFS AND ECMWF MODELS HAVE BEEN DIFFERING CONSIDERABLY IN TIMING AND PHASING FOR THESE FEATURES BUT RECENT RUNS ARE NOW IN GENERALLY BETTER AGREEMENT. CONSEQUENTLY, CONFIDENCE IS RELATIVELY HIGH FOR AN AREA OF HEAVY RAINFALL STRETCHING FROM THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY TO THE MID-ATLANTIC OVER THE COURSE OF A COUPLE DAYS AS A STRONG FLOW FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO IS EXPECTED TO BE IN PLACE ALONG WITH GOOD FRONTAL CONVERGENCE. MOREOVER, ALTHOUGH NO SPECIFICS CAN BE PROVIDED AT THIS TIME, SEVERE WEATHER MAY BECOME A THREAT FOR AREAS IN THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI AND TENNESSEE VALLEYS. THE RAINFALL ASSOCIATED WITH THIS WEATHER SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE CONSIDERABLE DROUGHT RELIEF FOR PARTS OF THE SOUTHEAST US.

FOR THURSDAY DECEMBER 11 - MONDAY DECEMBER 15: AS THIS COMPLEX WEATHER SYSTEM EVOLVES, THERE STILL REMAINS, HOWEVER, CONSIDERABLE UNCERTAINTY AND RUN TO RUN VARIABILITY IN THE EVOLUTION OF SUBSEQUENT HIGH IMPACT WEATHER - ANY SURFACE CYCLOGENESIS ALONG THE FRONTAL SYSTEM, FUTURE CYCLONE TRACK AND LATER THE EXTENT OF COLD AIR INTRUSION ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN US. SOME MODEL GUIDANCE INDICATES POTENTIAL CYCLOGENESIS ACROSS THE NORTHEAST GULF OF MEXICO WITH A CYCLONE TRACK UP THE EASTERN SEABOARD. DUE TO LARGE DIFFERENCES IN MODEL GUIDANCE, CONFIDENCE IS LOW AT THE CURRENT TIME FOR THIS EVOLUTION. BEHIND THE AFOREMENTIONED WEATHER SYSTEM, CANADIAN HIGH PRESSURE IS EXPECTED TO SHIFT SOUTHEAST TOWARDS THE EASTERN US AND USHER IN ANOTHER ROUND OF BELOW AVERAGE TEMPERATURES STRETCHING FROM THE NORTHERN PLAINS TO THE OHIO VALLEY AND EASTWARDS TO THE MID-ATLANTIC. RECENT MODEL GUIDANCE HAS DECREASED THE STRENGTH AND PENETRATION OF THIS COLD AIR SO IT NOW APPEARS THAT A SMALLER REGION WILL BE IMPACTED AS COMPARED TO YESTERDAY'S FORECAST. TEMPERATURES IN THESE AREAS, HOWEVER, ARE EXPECTED TO RANGE FROM 10-15 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.

  • As usual it's all in the timing. A footrace.

Don't think the cold air is going to get there soon enough though.

Mostly a heavy rain event for the SE and up the coast.

This does not bode well though for the SE US in the coming months. Although the severe drought will persist I think the chance for damaging severe weather in places like MS, AL and GA and maybe FL is likely in February and March. Not unusual for that time of year but it looks like cold air will keep sagging into the lower midwest mixing with warm air from the Gulf.

It keeps me employed, but I hate to see it happen.

    Steve,

what do you do? This is all just a hobby of mine .... I like to watch all of the models. The GFS, Euro, Nam mostly.

By the way, I will be in Port Saint Lucie from Dec19 through Jan 2nd. ALMOST South Florida image

  • Actually the name is Keith, but many get SteveK and I confused. He keeps stealing my icons. We need to coordinate on that. image

I am a professional emergency manager specializing in planning and operations, which takes me around the country (usually 8 SE US states) for most of the year. Don't get home too often. Atlanta has been my 2nd home for most of this year, which is a regional HQ for my agency. Weather is not the only thing I work on. We have some nasty man made stuff that unfortunately we have to watch out for these days too.

I'm really an amateur met too, but after 13 years in the EM biz, and having to really learn a lot about tropical models especially I can recognize the patterns that set up at certain times of the year.

I'll be at home on Dec. 19 also, until just after Xmas. I'm on the west coast two hours south of Tampa. Then it's back on the road.

  • Some light snow for Philly and NYC Wednesday.

The larger storm on Thursday / Friday will be rain in Philly / NYC, with the snow / sleet change somewhere around Boston.

North of Baaaaastin Maaaaas gets snow.

Don't think it will be cold enough south of there. Close this time but not enough. Maybe another one like this will set up in a week or two with colder temps.

    Then again this could change.
