collections that will never be known

unless we share um here...darned it...let's hear about those true pedigrees

my granny shared my grandpa's with me when i was 6 years old in 1968

first off my grandfather was one who processed thru ellis island from hungary in the early 1900's and was quick to be recieved as one of st.louis's prominent cabinet makers.

most noteable by his works only harry blackstone senior treasured in secret that just isn't even aware to us

so he had passion very deep which included our near and dear common in coins too

so my granny in 68' liked me best and would snatch me from tha lou for week visits to rural missouri (desoto-outskirts)) and one visit she'd ask if i'd help her put some coins in books with her...you bet granny spilled out my mouth

so she returns from her bedroom with a box which inside had wood boxes grandpa made...one we both tried and tried to figuire how to open and never could

the 1st one we did open had paper rolls as some banks knew tha mint just forgot to wrap um was all so i reached in to grab the 1st one out and the paper just crumbled apart spilling out these red pennies with injuns on um...wow was those pennies kool to look at raced with teddy smilin

my granny tossed me a book and showed me how to press um in with our thumbs...lol aye

a couple were found that didn't crumble too but they was lincolns and after seeing red injuns...well ya know

but you bet i mashed a red 14-d after saying hey i just found another to her

we went through buff's-merc's-slq's and all those ugly barber's too till that box and books (almost filled) we're set aside

then she asked if i could help her with a dresser drawer...go figuire i even learned about false bottom concepts that night

so we finally pressed a spot on the back of a drawer the same time we pressed a spot on the side and the inside bottom popped up

this was where i learned what proofs were and seated coinage and yes coins were made out of yellow metal too but we both just sat there and stacked on tha table...just didn't have books for um so we admired um was all and put um back

mom was dragged to the mints on vacations so she knew special things were bought

i know at this point alot are like yeah right...so i close after this

this was the collection that will never be known part

my mom and dad explained to me after they picked me up what grandpa was doing with all those paint can's lining the basement wall was all about

after living before-during and after the depression my grandpa never trusted a bank other then to trade his paper money in to so he'd fill a paint can half way then cover the rest in sand and each had it's own denomination...never had to jump out a window over stocks either

why we'll never know is after my granny passed and a darn estate auction was held that us now living in california just couldn't make it to (dad n mom had like 5 jobs between um raising some 5 kids preventing it)

so in the late 70's alot of people had "you suck stories" i'd love to hear as i'll never know what was in grandpa's paint cans

"grandpa's paint cans" is my share and ya know...it's kinda nice some stay that way too as all i have to know is grandpa had paint cans...i saw um
....next

my granddad died last year i did not know him well as we moved several states away when i was young, he grew up in the depression and was a typical hoarder who also didn't trust banks after his death i was recruited to help go through his old house which had been sealed up for a couple of years as he spent his last years in a home i only had a couple of days to try to go through the house which was literally packed with anything and everything it seems he would just buy anything and store it i found things bought from stores in the 50s and 60s in boxes unopened with receipts, i also found many red books and other coin related material such as holders, rollers, folders, etc and also a notebook with a massive amount of coins listed mostly morgans but also alot of seated and bust coinage along with a good bit of gold and i have no doubt somewhere in that house or on the property(there was over 10 acres with a few out buildings) there was a hoard of coins and probably paper currency as well but i never found anything and the property was sold i dont know if anything was ever found or ever will be for that matter but after reading your post i'm thinking you know i didn't ever open any of those paint cans stacked up in the basement.
