Submitting 1955-1964 Flat Pack Proof Sets (Calling MadMarty and others)

Ok, so my grandpa had many 1955-1964 proof sets that he left to me and my four cousins.
After searching my 1/5th for double dies and CAM/DCAM coins, I've set aside the dozen or so sets that have the choicest coins.
I've set these aside because I have been contemplating submitting these to a TPG.

My questions to you all are the following:

1) If I'm breaking up individual coins from the original flat packs, do I need to further transfer the flimsy clear-sealed plastic packing into 2x2 holders (and not be charged removal)?
2) Some of the proof coins have a chalky-like substance on them (specifically the year 1957), is there any way I can conserve these to bring back the original surfaces, or are these coins doomed for eternity? (I am not planning on submitting these coins because of the surfaces, but some of these coins have nice CAM/DCAM surfaces that would be choice coins for submission).
3) Can anyone else think of anything I need to do, aside from the standard submission form stuff, regarding these proof coins?

Thanks for the help guys.

I'm interested in the answer as well, Stone. I just searched a bunch of 1963 and 1964 proof sets from my Grandpa the other day I didn't pick out any that I thought would make CAM. So I won't be submitting any of this batch. They looked more like Mint Sets to me.

i've left coins in the cello and placed them in 2x2's with no charge, i generally do it that way if the coin is toned. it is pretty much a requirement that the coin be in a 2x2, though.

the haze can be removed safely, but i wouldn't suggest you do that unless you know what you're doing. also, it's worth mentioning that often the haze can make an otherwise brilliant coin look DCAM'ish. you really need to look at lots of these intact sets to be able to distinguisg "what's inside" with any degree of success, and even then it's easy to be fooled

    3) Can anyone else think of anything I need to do, aside from the standard submission form stuff, regarding these proof coins?
perhaps it would be prudent to let some disinterested party give you an informed opinion of what you think you have. online pictures would be helpful, but an in-hand assessment would be best.

I can add, check the coins for hairlines (that is a grade killer) nothing worse than getting back a PR65! Choicest? Are they CAMs? If they are not at least CAMs they may not be worth submitting. I'll let Russ chime in with dipping instructions.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • I can also add,

unless you can grade these proof coins very well,

your set is worth more intact

the coin has to be out of the cellophane holder to make a good personal appraisel

for every year you describe, you can buy a lovely example for less than it will cost you to submit
