I am considering pulling the trigger on this one.At under $500 it seems like a good buy,but I cant tell if it is AU 58 or low MS.What do you think. All opinions welcomed and appreciated.

Nice coin...it definitely has wear. I would estimate from the image it is either an AU-55 or AU-58.

  • At first glance I couldn't tell if it was a weak strike MS or AU, but it appears to have a rub on the cheek, so I say AU. On a side note I do not like how that toning is sitting on that coin, it looks like recent toning that may be covering something. For a 173 year old coin to have toning and the toning is not in and around the devices? Makes me question how recently it occurred.

    AU50 at best.

I'm always skeptical of these 'reflective' angled pictures because they definitely make the surfaces look a lot better than they actually are.

The feathers are indicative of about AU-50 detail... would want to see strike and luster in hand to see if that is all wear or just strike weakness.
  • I agree with everyone else, there is no way it is MS ... I would pay maybe $200

Clearly AU, but a bodaciously lovely AU.

It looks like a nice coin but not even close to MS.
Look at the luster breaks in the fields-particularly the reverse.
This one is low AU and possibly high XF if the pic is taken in a way to hide that
    face, neck and bust rub.

I think MS is optimistic, however, it is a very attractive coin

    Thanks for that tip Joe.

  • I would stay away from unslabbed (NGC PCGS ANACS ICG) coins unless viewed in hand. This coin could have been cleaned and retoned over as much as 40 years in an envelop. Seller may not even know what to look for since sometimes toning can hide the cleaning unless you look very carefully. I would not pay more than say 150 for this one.

I'm far from an expert, but it looks like a 58 with very nice eye appeal.

I'd call it AU50,and I don't have a problem with the color because it probably doesn't look like that

unless its at just the right angle.Having said that, its hard to find a decent 1835 thats not just 'plain'.

Thats the one date I need to complete a year set(minus 1815),just can't find one I like. I like that one though.image

Paying $500 for a raw CBH is really stretching it, unless you have the coin in hand --- AND, you are very experienced in grading MS CBHs. This coin is not MS.

<< <i>AU58... for those of you in the lower grade camp, let's see a photo of YOUR AU58 Bust 50c. While photos can lie, this one looks like an easy $500 buy. >>

    Hey Joe,
According to the ANA Grading Standards; AU-58 The barest trace of wear
may be seen on one or more of the highest points of the design.
Here is an example of the barest trace of wear on the highest points of the design.
Here if you look you will see the wear on the chin and the nose.
    This is AU58 wear.
Compare the wear and luster breaks on the face neck and bust of the coin in the OP
If we let the standards down Joe we will never get them back to where they should be.

    Hi lcoopie,
Yes there is. It is also just a touch that you can see on the top of the right wing facing (the birds left wing), the top of the talon and above the birds eye.
Here is another pic of AU wear on the reverse of my 1824/2/0
See that touch or rub or luster break above the birds eye and top of the left wing facing-that is 58 wear.

AU...no doubt. Highest it would grade is 55.

    I grade 53

    Joe,

I have to disagree on the 58 grade. Luster is clearly broken very significantly in the fields, there is very noticeable wear on the high points...so much so that it is getting to some of the not so high spots. The reverse is most likely weakness on the left part of the eagle, but there is still significant wear.

No need to see some of my old AU58's...I think most already have...

If you would like, we can have him send it in for grading...if it comes back 58, I'll send you 100$ and, if it doesnt, you can send me a C-note. image Whatcha say?
