Can green corrosion be cleaned off coins?

I have a buff nickle with that crap on it,just wondering if there is a way to clean it.

Kind of an odd question, just about anything will get the green off the coin, try soap and water, if that does not work try rubbing it with a cloth, if that does nto work there is always the belt sander.

Hmmmm, did you mean without damaging the coin?

Then nope. Just enjoy the green.

Got a pic? Once cleaned off, there may be damage exposed in the form of pitting. There have been several past threads concerning this topic suggesting soaking in olive or mineral oil for several months and then using a tooth pick or rose thorn to remove the verdigris.

We really need to know what type of coin and what type of green, is it wet green or thick green? There is a difference.

The wet green is closer to the surface, the thick green is deep in the coin.

Give us more and we'll give more.

  • I agree there are several types of "green" that grow on coins, especially nickels and cents that are stored wrong. Does the green look like this?

IF so, it can easily be removed with a day soak in acetone. The coin below was the middle one in the group.
