Mercury Dime Question-What should I do?

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,286 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hi, decided to sell my Mercury dime set to make money for other coin collecting interests.

I tried to sell it at a dealer today and they insulted me at the price which was no surprise. I am now faced with a decision. Should I sell them as a group or sell them individually. Should I list them on the BST or try my luck at ebay again(another story there!)

The lowest is graded AU55 and highest at ms66. Most were cracked out of holders long ago and put in my Mercury Dime Dansco album. A few were in ANACS holders due to old cleaning or dipping and one says scratched. One is currently still in an NCS holder and 4 are in NGC holders. The rest I purchased either raw or threw away the holder info. I kept the paper holder info with the grade and TPG company for later use and to help me grade. Anyway, they look great as a set even if a few are "problem" coins.

I would accept offers if you wanted to send me a PM but I am not really trying to sell them on this forum.

Forgot to mention that I dont have the 3 keys-would be very expensive to make a AU/BU set. I would also know better than to crack those guys out.

I'd consider getting the 16 D back into plastic, just for the purposes of selling it, maybe the 21's also if the grades are high enough.
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

I think he said he does not have the keys.

I think the OP might learn a lesson about cracking out coins.
I know a dealer that looks for the keys and offers melt on the rest-no mattet what.

If you had AU-55 - MS-66 slabbed coins that you cracked out of (PCGS, NGC, ANACS) slabs for an album, I would not be too surprised by a dealers low-ball offer.
You probably lost half of the coins value by doing this since "dealer grading" is much more subjective.

Oh yeah... Strange, but so do I.... image

When I started making the set, I didnt care too much for slabbed coins. I actually began with raw coins. I originally just used slabs to help me learn to grade coins. Now I realize I will have an uphill battle trying to recoup some money. But no one has answered the original questions, sell them as a group or individually and BST vs Ebay.

Another question, does anyone think the fact that I saved the paper in the holder info will make any difference in pricing?

If you don't have the keys, sell them here as a group.

You'll probably do better breaking them up and selling them on the BST to others trying to complete the set. However, I wouldn't expect to get prices for "certified pieces" that are no longer certified. Good luck on whatever path you choose.

White coins or toned coins? If you put them on BST be sure to PM me so that I know they are there.

Get good pics of them and list them on the BST or ebay, not in a set if you want the most money or in a set if you want to sell it faster or with less work.

Pics would matter more than the papers but include the papers for whatever it helps.

You could try the BST board with photos and decriptions. You could also try a show were you can take the set from dealer to dealer.
