Got some coins back from CCCS New image

CCCS is a new Canadian grading company that just started to have hard slab coins. Previously they used flips like ICCS. When they started to have the hard slabs, CCCS ran a special of $13/coin + shipping so I sent in 10 coins to give them a try. I have used them in the past when all they had was the flips.

Got the coins back today and here is one of them in the new slab:

I am delighted with the grade. After so many AU55 and AU58 George V nickel 5c I finally got a MS grade. The image makes the coin look crappy, in reality it is quite nice with NO wear. I bought a new camera today and once I read how to work it I'll get images of just the coin.

Here is an image of the coin with my new camera. My first attempt with this camera. Looks better?

    hi Don,

How was their grading compared to your expectations overall?

That ios a very interesting grade for a coin that looks (from the given picture) to have very few contact marks. Is it possible that they saw some signs of wear and market-graded it up to a 62?

I really do not see that many fully struck George V nickels. The obverse around the base of the crown that contains jewels/pearls is never what one would like

The 1923 5c is really an awesome coin. My image is really bad. I have a very difficult time imaging the George V 5c.

Here are some of the other grades with commentary:

1917 25c EF40 I thought AU50 at least. This coin was discussed on a Canadian Coin forum and most people thought AU or better.

    1859 1c Doubled 185 AU50. I thought MS 60 BN

    1859 1c W9/8 F-12 I thought F-12

    1920 10c MS60 I thought MS61 or 62.

    1935 $1 MS62 ex NGC AU58 I thought no question MS coin.

    1886 25c Obv #5 G-6 I thought it might be a 6/6

    1899 1c Doubled last 9 MS60 cleaned. I don't see any cleaning.

1900 1c EF-40 cleaned. No way is this only EF40. Really disappointed in this one.

and now for the travelling coin, grading experiment coin.

Newfoundland 1942-C 10c EF45 ex NGC AU58, ex-ICCS MS60. This coin is MS62 all day long in my opinion. I've made a few donations to the grading services with this coin.

I think most Canadian coin collectors will agree that the series of KGV 5 cents (1922-1936) are the most difficult to grade in au50 condition and up.

do you mean they are hard to find in higher grades, or that they are hard to grade....

The problem is so many dates within this series are not fully struck on the obverse and even though there is no signs of wear, a weakly struck coin rarely get the appropriate grade. If the pearls at the base of the crown is incomplete, there is an immediate thought that the coin is not MS.

I meant that they are definitely hard to grade. It's very difficult to 'guess' what ICCS or CCCS is going to put on the grading cert.

But now that you mention it, they too are difficult to find in ms63 and higher grades.

What looks like nicks on the rim are really on the ring holding the coin. They are not on the coin.

I hope to get images of the other coins after the Bills game. I'll post them if there is any interest.
