The were discovered in Massachusetts, most were found in Boston , another hotspot was upstate New York.

  • wikipedia - "They were originally found in New England, and many were distributed in cigarette packs in vending machines"

maybe i should do research, and then ask..

You are gonna open them, right?

  • I got OBW rolls in New England in 1955 and it was years before I looked. There was nothing of interest there. I guess you had to get some from just one particular's day production.

  • I don't think I could restrain myself from opening that roll. Are '55 OBW rolls tough to find?

Sorry- but you know those were looked at before. It would be nice to find un-opened original 1955 cent rolls but they are so easy to open and close up. I have a bunch of 1972 rolls I bought that were supposed to be unopened a few years ago- when I opened them I found several finger prints. I still have them somewhere. image

Getting hit by a train first. Like something in 200 million to 1 chance of finding a DD.
  • There was no First National Bank in Baltimore in 1955.

If you paid a bunch for it chances are you got boned! There are way too many people that still sell old paper wrappings and the end crimpers. A roll like that is like a sealed proof set, you can bet 95% of the time it has already been searched. Unless you bought it or know exactly where it came from then you may have a chance.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I do not believe the DDO's were found in rolls. Rumor had it a NE dealer had
a roll with a DDO showing on the end and claimed the roll
contained gem DDO's, but this was debunked if I remember correctly.

I have opened MANY 55 rolls and found the coins to generally be sub-par because they had been picked through and re-rolled so many times over the years.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

nobody will pay a premium on a chance one will be a DD. The odds are very much against you. Go ahead and open it up.
  • If you don't find the "big" one, the second one is nice also and more rare.
I personally have opened up a roll, searched through it and sealed it back up just to see if I could. Guess what, I could not tell the difference.
I once got a roll where the toned end coin was in the middle?
A good way to tell if a roll has been tampered with is to shake it, if it is lose than there is a good chance it has been opened.

Actually, I thought they were mostly found in western Massachusetts.
