Can I get some info on this medal please?

Are medals graded like coins? And if so, what might this grade and what would be the value? I love the look of it! Thank you in advance.

I posted the above questions in the World Forum, but I only got one reply with no information. So I figured someone over here might have some information for me. The replies to threads are certainly more brisk over here. Thanks all!

    Napolean.
There once was a place called
    Camelotimage
  • As far as I know, medals aren't graded like coins, unless they are graded on the standards akin to European coins.

This extremely rare French order which was issued to all surviving soldier's of Napoleon Bonaparte's " Grande Armee " who had served between 1792 and 1815. Observe shows the bust of Emperor Napoleon 1. Reverse inscription reads: " Campagnes de 1792 a 1815. A Ses Compagnons de Gloire sa Derniers Pensee Ste. Helene 5 Mai 1821 " translation " Campaigns of 1792 to 1815 with his Companions of Glory his Last Thoughts St.Helene May,1821".

The designer of this rare medal was Albert-Desire Barre, and is marked with his trademark (an anchor). The medal was nicknamed by the French as the " chocolate medal " because of it's colour.

There is one for sale on e-Bay for $147.00 I tried to link but it didn't work. Do a search on e Bay (1821 Napoleon St. Helena Medal) it will come up. You can then compare yours to theirs.
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever
