Years ago before I knew anything, I bought one of their proof set runs for around $1000. I ended up returning them because the coins were crap and some of the packaging was incomplete. It was only later I realized how lucky I was given how absurdly expensive TV crap is.

I watch HSN coin sales for a good laugh. Most of the stuff is modern crap that will never go up in value. ive estimated that they sell stuff for around 25% of whats its really worth. When it comes to really expenisve nice coins, they are more attuned to an average price, but still a little high.

its worth about half of what they are selling it for
  • That guy makes everything on there sound like if you buy that crap, it will be worth 10x in a year.image

$20 per coin in a Nationally advertised catalog?

Musak is so full of CRAP!

Whats so special about this is that you get the En-ti-re Collection fo only $49.95. Thats all 4 coins in Sil-u-ver! (Which gives each coin a melt value of $3.24) Woo Hoo! Great investment!

This gets so old. Most small consumer nonessential items are marked up a similar amount or more. They are not making a killing on these items. Selling on TV is very expensive.

    From HSN's quarterly report:

HSN gross profit margins were 33.0% and 34.7% for the quarters ended September 30, 2008 and 2007, respectively. The decline in the gross profit margins was primarily the result of the product mix shift, increased promotional activity in jewelry and fashion and increased shipping and handling costs due to the product mix shift and higher fuel costs.

I was actually on one of the shows with Meezak (live) one time. They hired me to design and mint a set of 4 President concept dollars. They sold about 2,500 sets (ICG certified) with the Eagle Head reverse for around $40 per 4-coin set. And they sold about 10,000 sets with the Statue of Liberty reverse in their own holders for about $25 per 4-coin set.

Since then, I've seen these concept dollars typically sell for $50 or more PER COIN on eBay. So those were a pretty good deal.

I agree with Frankcoins. Everything on TV is going to have a huge mark-up. And everything on TV, not just coins, is a sales pitch. If you want to see HUGE markups, just look at the jewelry industry. The difference between retail and wholesale is often 10 to 1.

You've probably seen those "gold kit" commercials and the like on TV (they advertise to buy your scrap gold jewelry for cash via the mail). I heard they pay about 30% of melt. Not such a good deal if true. All that TV advertising is expensive.

And if there is anything that we should realy be furious about right now, it is the raping of this country by Wall Street and the Federal Reserve. "Expensive" TV coins pale in comparison.

    PS
After the show, Meezak took some of us out to dinner at his favorite Tampa-area steakhouse. After dinner we had some wine. I'm not a wine afficianado in the slightest. But this stuff was good. I asked what it was. 1863 Le Mole Bola or something like that. The waiter said it was bottled in France during the Battle of Antietam.
