how do i get to my private messages to view an old message. I currently have no new messages, which is how i normally get to them.

Click on the "no new messages" icon and then look for the "view history" link. Click on that.

I get a kick out of the "Duh" stage that most forumites go through.

When I first started I never really noticed the "1 new message" at the top of the screen. One day I noticed it, clicked on it, saw the message and still didn't have a clue what to do next!
